What standards are we talking about here? Those set by Richt? Or was it those defensive players that everyone is now claiming was the reason for his early success?

or (gasp) Donnan? or (double gasp) Goff?

or let's go back to my childhood and talk about Dooley whom without Herschel would have arguably coached 26 years or so with no NC. How many times was Dooley derailed by Auburn? Or Pitt? Or Penn St? Or Clemson.

This isn't like we're talking about a Bama program with 13 National Championships.

I really don't care if they fire Richt today or at the end of the season. I'm just trying to have a positive outlook on what I believe can still be a decent season with a poor start.

What I'm really tired off are fans that act like every day is January 2nd 1981 or whatever day after we won what might be the only National Championship in most of our lifetimes.

Good point southerlover. Our pedestal ain't that high......or at least not as high as we all think it has been.

Certainly want it high though.

Wow, quite possibly the biggest cop out I may have ever read on here. Good thing you or wlayton were never in charge of making great football teams. Just because we haven't won a NC since '80, we shouldn't set high standards??? Seriously???

Here's a few examples of teams that DID set high standards, even though the weren't Alabama--

UF--Playing since 1906----first NC 1996.
FSU--since '48, first NC 93.
LSU--since 1896, won one all the way back in 58, WAY before 1980, but started winning again in 2003.

So, luckily for these schools, their fans, alumni, AD's and others wanted higher standards for their teams, and they made it happen. I guess it's your right to expect little because we may not have as storied a history as ND or 'bama or whoever, but it sounds like just another excuse to me.

Re-read sadlerdawg, we DIDN'T say that we shouldn't set or HAVE high standards or expectations, we do expect the best and expect excellence.......he was just pointing out that our past isn't exactly the past of a BAMA, USC, ND, Mich, OSU, Texas, Okla, UMiami etc etc.

When it comes to EXPECTING excellence, we are definitely in your camp and everybody's on this forum.

In my life, I have always expected excellence in anything I have ever done or been associated with......anything less is unacceptable.

(btw....I did coach a 10-12 year old team to the Super Bowl at the Valdosta Boys Club league once..... :silly: )

So what now...

Am I supposed to be content with us being the equivalent of Mississippi State or
something?

The problem is the program did get elevated to a higher level, and I will always
thank Richt for being a part of that. I just don't like going backwards.

Plus let's remember this hasn't been a team in the 3 most recent years that over
achieved and fell short after valiant efforts. This is a team that is what 15-15
in it's last 30 games. A team that lost 10-6 to the storied history of the University
of Central Florida.

wlayton, I may have mis-read or mis-interpreted what he was saying, but none of his statement sounds to me like he is expectant of great things, especially these two sentences. I'm also not sure how "who's standards are we talking about here?" could indicate that they should be higher. And I just threw your name in because you were agreeing with him about the pedestal, and it sounded to me like you were saying the same thing. If I misunderstood either of your posts, it's the internet, it happens.
