Something that has bothered me for a while, haven't really said too much about this.
I do mention quite often that I am a big supporter of the offensive line. Looking back at many of the comments from almost every blog available for a long time, seems the same is mentioned when recruiting is discusssed. Meaning this . . . . Georgia bloggers seem to get "overly excited" when the names of high school running backs are recruited.
When it comes to offensive linemen, recently we have begun to hear more about line play. Think there are some that do watch what is happening on that side of the recruiting ledger. Not nearly as much as the running back or quarterback positions. The glory positions.
Here is my problem with Georgia. How is it we can get the high caliber of running backs, and quarterbacks on campus, but not offensive linemen?
Many were all over Searels. He left and now we have Friend. Now it seems that a lot of "stuff" I read about Friend is the same "stuff" that was written or blogged about Searels. Questioning their abilities as line coaches.
Personally, I liked Searels and still think he is a really good offensive line coach. Have said here a few times that Coach Friend is a good line coach, from where I sit.
My problem is this . . . . Why would running backs the caliber of Gurley and Marshall along with two or three other better than average backs sign on with us? Now we have Michel and Chubb coming in the 2014 Class it appears. Why would they come to play in Athens if there was not a line to block and allow them to show their skills?
My thoughts are the folks running the show on the offensive side of the ball are not doing their jobs. Not the offensive line coaches, the coaches that make the final decisions. I do not believe the head coach is putting enough of his "free time" into making a difference on the offensive line. Too much looking for "headlines" not enough effort put into building an offensive line that really could make the running backs and quarterbacks "shine".
If I were a high school offensive lineman, skilled and highly rated, it would not take too much to get me to Athens. Especially if I knew the likes of Sony Michel and Nick Chubb were on their way, along with the likes of Gurley and company.
So, I bark about todd grantham and the defensive side . . . . what about mark richt and the offensive side. Is the head coach not capable of bringing in superior offensive linemen? If the offensive line is having problems year after year, in my opinon, that falls on mark richt. He has said openly that grantham takes care of the defense. Guess it must be Mike Bobo's fault that we are not getting more and better offensive linemen that leave the state.
mark richt is the head coach, time for him to own up to "something". He supposedly hired Coach Friend, Coach Searels and todd grantham. Not possible that our head coach is responsible for the downfall of our team. Right? I consider 8-5, losing to Vanderbilt, Nebraska and some of the other games that he was sleep walking through to be his fault alone.
Beginning to think that it is more than stubborness, not sure he is mentally aware of what is "not going on under his lack of leadership".
Again, every coach that has come and gone since richt's arrival, all are on his plate. Coaches have to get their players up for a game. Head coaches have to get their coaches and players up for a game. Do not see that talent with this head coach. He apparently is an offensive coach, a coach that turned that job over to Mike Bobo.
What ever happened to mark richt the Special Teams Coach? I know . . . . another coaching job that is not his fault. Looks to me we are in big trouble, and trouble is just around the corner.
Two linemen that I think help make up a good SEC offensive line, Kublanow and Andrews. Outside of those two, not impressed.
