Few simple comments. At the end of the day, it’s called management, and CMR is responsible.
- First of all this is not about his demeanor. The “light a fire” or “be aggressive” comments are useless to me. Everyone lauded him for being calm when it worked and vice versa. Emotion is overrated- execution is not.
- Team management means having the right number of players in each spot every year, and getting them ready to play. How many times have we seen not having experienced players at some spot every year. Remember the lack of O-Linemen (btw- that is going to happen again at tackle). Remember the lack of RBs. Remember not having enough D-Linemen. How about no DBs this year. And every time, when there is a chance to get players experience, we don’t. We used to a few years ago, but we don’t anymore. Bottom-line, it’s almost by accident if we have experienced players at most positions, not through planning. And that happens once every 3-4 years. Bama does it every year.
- Leadership: We were behind so many other colleges at basic things such as nutrition and training. I know a lot of that was due to our AD but no reason why our training was so antiquated for so many years. And instead of being a key contributor in the coaching schemes, he is dead weight (I’ll explain that below). Mark Richt is a figure head, and that shows up in behavior patterns again and again. When our D was getting gashed last year against the run, nothing was done and all we heard were excuses. That cost us the MNC in 2012. What about Blair Walsh. He was left to hang by himself and is now all-world. Where was the leadership by Richt to correct something. In response to kicking issues last year, his solution was to get educated in the next off-season and try to contribute. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. You get GAs to help, watch film and help correct it right NOW. This year, our ST were a BIG red light. It cost us the Clemscum game but since we won everything after that I wonder how much focus was put on that. Now, we are done for this year thanks to the ST.
- He is always behind the times. Sometimes it feels like he is in 1998. That applies to training methods where we were applying systems that others used 15 years ago. Only recently has it changed. And as things progress again, he’ll aain be left behind. Take Bama for example. Do you know they do extensive yoga for flexibility to reduce muscle and hammy injuries. We’ll probably try it in 2025. What about our play calling- only in 2010 did we develop some wrinkles and that was due to Bobo. Again, these are comments about process because in individual situations, CMR does do some of those things (LSU fake punt), but not consistently.
- Richt is a coaching liability because he is a figurehead like Mack Brown. When you are only allowed so many coaches, you need to be able to contribute in some way. He does not. Grantham runs the D. Bobo runs the O. No one runs the ST, and Richt just attends functions. Ever since he handed off play-calling to Bobo, Richt has gotten more and more detached from the nuts and bots of the game. If Richt would have gone on a 4 month vacation last year in 2012, our results would have been the same- that is how little he impacts the actual games.
I had the same issues with Richt in 2009 but he did not have proper support then and I also thought it was due to complacency. He came out of that period strongly that led me to believe that he’ll not make some of these mistakes again. He is NOT complacent anymore. I think he tries hard. But he never has a plan B, is always 3 years behind new methods, and is a passive reactor rather than an aggressive proactive leader.
This is the first time I am even contemplating this, but perhaps he should leave. I would not be surprised if we won out or came back strongly this year- his teams have done that before- last year against FU, or against AU in 2006 or in 2007. The point that he is good enough to execute the turnaround just shows that if he would have tried before, we would not have needed a turn around. This is not out of anger or spite. And it will set us back for some time, but we’ll never reach our goal of an MNC under him, and 30+ years is a long time for UGA. We’ll be a very good team 20% of the time, a good team 30% of the time, an average team 30% of the time, and a bad team 20% of the time. we’ll be a GREAT team 0% of the time under him.
Again, this is not due to anger about today. Most of things I mentioned did not directly apply to today (except ST). All things equal, I’d rather have him as the coach for UGA than not, but I feel that after 13 years as the HC of UGA, he still seems to be in the learning not leading mode. If you say we are lagging due to injuries or youth, I will say we never recruited or developed players to fill in such as even Ole Miss did today. If our O-Line was what it should have been, then it would have been easier to overcome young receivers. IF we would have recruited properly, or even played guys that have been good (Sheldon Dawson, Wiggins), we would be better today. If we would have tried out a couple more snappers after our issues, we may be better off. IF we would treat ST a a third of the game where Positive difference can be made instead of passively fair-catching everything then we could be so much better.
Hope I did not offend anyone. Regardless, I will always pull for the Dawgs and our team. They need our support now, especially after the injuries. One of my best memories about UGA is seeing students waiting in the night for the team bus to arrive from Atlanta after the 2012 SEC CG to support our players. I always want to be like that, but that does not have to stop me from wanting my team to be better. I’ll support my team always, but in this case, for the long-term betterment of the players and the program, Richt likely need to leave.
