Rebuilding UGA Football

Some interesting thoughts and it sounds a bit like some of our conversations.

Great quote from Mike Leach . . . .

“You’re either coaching it or allowing it to happen”.

That was a good read Buc-Thank you!

Always thought Mike Leach was a bit "out there" but I must say I absolutely love his quote & it certainly seems to apply in Athens, GA. We are clearly "allowing it to happen" way too often. Which on the bright side is better than what was going on during Willie's days as DC when actually was "coaching it". "Don't look back for the ball"...that quote from our DBs regarding WM's pass coverage philosophy still baffles me to this very day.

Hmmmmmm, you fellas have unlocked a new theory in my tiny brain. Perhaps we have been guilty of "over-coaching" our defense these past 5+ years. Maybe all we need is for TD to come back to Athens for a quick coaching clinic that goes something like this:

See that guy dressed in something other than Red & Black running with the football. He just said some really nasty things about your Momma. Now, run as fast as you can towards him, hurl all of your weight at him while looking directly at the target with your arms outstretched & make him regret the day he was born!!!

I coach baseball... mainly I coach hitting. This is the way I approach it: You see that white ball in
the pitchers hand? In a minute he's going to throw it in your direction. That ball is your enemy.
The ball did something very mean to you. You HATE that baseball. Think about the last time you got really mad. That baseball did whatever it was that made you mad. Now when that ball gets close enough.. I want you to remember that, and club it to death with that bat you've got in your hands.
You may only get to club it once, so make sure you get your moneys worth.

I found out quickly that works better than promising them an ice cream sandwich if they get a hit, lol

Like you GooseDawg78, can't imagine why WM is currently the DB coach at #1 Oklahoma. What did they know that we did not? Was it a case similar to Richt's.

Meaning . . . . from offensive coordinator at FSU, then coming to UGA as head coach. As Mike Honcho pointed out, the decline in UGA football was a result of not understanding. Did Richt not understand what he was doing when he appointed WM as defensive coordinator. Know this, WM left in a huff.

The closer I look, the more convinced I am that Richt cannot sit at the top. Could be wrong, maybe all of this has opened his eyes and he can apply it to quality college coaching.

Don't mean this to be ugly, but I don't think that Richt can carry on his outside interests and lead a program that most of us want to see excel. I have said this before . . . . in my opinion, Richt is an offensive coordinator, he cannot walk and chew gum at the same time. I know that sounds bad, but I really look closely at some of his promotions and it does not look like something I would want to have on my resume.

I really think that he will leave at the end of the year. I wish him well, and I don't think that he will be involved with football. That would probably be good for Richt and for those of us that will always want the best from our head coach.

Guess that Dooley and I disagree on this point, but VD and I have never been on the same page. VD was as lucky as "Bucky", he had Herschel Walker. All we have to do is check the stats for both of those guys, stats sometimes do speak for themselves.

Wow.

I think the negative stuff on CTG should be put into perspective.

1. If Saban had been judged on the new 3-4 at Bama after year ONE, he would have been fired. He lost to La-Monroe, folks!!!!!!!!! He was 7-6. Fire him!!!

2. The defense has NOT given up 35+ points a game as someone noted.
BSU 35 ( with most of their drives starting on their 40 or so),
SC 24 ( with one of those drives starting on the Sc 10 yard line!!!!, 21 points off returned turnovers)
CC 0

That is more like 19 a game. Take away the 10 yard drive by SC after the fake punt, it is even better.

3. Year 2. That doesn't mean he has all the pieces he needs. HIS players are at MOST sophomores this year, red shirt frosh, or true frosh.

4. BOTH ILB's were out against SC.

People, Bobo and CMR's philosophy have been there the duration. WHY do we have no OL depth after 11 years?????????????????????????

You are right on the defense. It has played pretty well. Scoring in college football has been on the serious upswing too.
