Rebuilding UGA Football

Rebuilding UGA Football was created by Buc
Had a few of days to think about the first three games of the season, and sit with some folks that understand football well.

Seems most think that UGA has a good football team. Question was asked right away, “How good is this football team.” Several thoughts were thrown into the pool of folks and it became very interesting.

One of the first topics that really got my attention was Grantham and the defense. Some had thoughts about the real strength of the defense as compared to where it was thought this side of the football would be at this point of the season.

As can be imagined, one of the first points was Jenkins coming to the defensive side of the ball. Pulling out of Oklahoma State and dressing in the Red and Black. One gentleman that I have great respect for said this . . . (He writes for a major media outlet) “Jenkins has great talent, his talent will pay dividends many times before this season is over, remember, he really has not played SEC football yet.” Thought about that, then looked at what Grantham is doing with that front group. He is busting their butts, but he is also coddling them like a bunch of new born pups. That part of Grantham's plan will be witnessed by all of us. Jenkins has lost a lot of weight, says to me that this young man is in a program far different than high school and junior college, and that is his football resume to this point. Think about that, I sure did. Ole Miss will be an interesting look-see at Jenkins, and Grantham.

One of the folks in the group said that he is going to be much like a certain player from Auburn that now plays for the Detroit Lions (this gentleman played for UM). Speed was talked about, and of course, whether he is mean spirited or not. That is yet to be seen.

I believe that Jenkins for the first time in his football life is with folks that will help him become an incredible defensive football player. Grantham will at least take him as far as he wants to go. Agree or disagree, I like the fact that Grantham is not giving Jenkins any room for being any more than he is. Jenkins missing practice, my thoughts, out of shape. This young man does not need to wear a green jersey. Get your butt in SEC football shape and all of us will move on from there. With his weight loss, some 20 pounds (or more), appears that Jenkins might be a defensive end in the 3/4, or an even faster, stronger man in the middle. We will see . . . . soon.

Said a couple of weeks back that I was going to make some comments about our football team on this board. I am surrounded by people that support FSU, UF, USF, UCF, UM and UGA. Little bits and pieces that I think you might want to hear, I will post. Just a different view, from someone that is LOST IN SPACE.

Go Dawgs . . . . Step up Grantham, I think you have what it takes . . . . Ole Miss on Fox at 12:00 p.m. Saturday 9/24/11. Maybe next year, we will be in the TV slots where the “Big Boys Play.” Thanks FSN.

I cannot for the life of me understand why people are still sold on CTG. Say what you will about "fire," "aggressiveness," "hard hitting," etc.

At the end of the day, scoring defense is all that matters, and it isn't here yet.

Last year, the excuse was that he doesn't have the right athletes the make the 3-4 work. A whole offseason has gone by and there has been more time for the players to adjust and learn the defense and to change personel around and see who fits best where. So far, against non-glorified-high school opponents this season, we've still been giving up the 35+ points per game we always have since Willy arrived.

The shutout against Coastal Carolina was a start. Ole Miss is by far the worst team in the SEC this year, so next week's game will be telling. If what they score on us doesn't begin with a zero or a one, there will still be some serious questions left about CTG's ability to make his defense work at Georgia, imo.

Some folks like BVG, Erk and others just choose to play defense that way.

Guess Willy had more than 1 1/2 years to to come to that conclusion.

The paragraph above speaks for itself. A whole offseason has gone by . . . . ever check the NCAA rules concerning coaches and player contact. A whole off-season has gone by . . . . ok.

I think the defense will continue to improve.
Grantham had a deep hole to crawl out of.

As for not believing in CTG because of points scored against us, I would just point out that there is one offense that NO defense can stop . . . your own.

I think many expected CTG from the big bad NFL was going to show up with his 3-4 scheme and that was that.

If I am not mistaken, CTG did not become a DC until
2005. Before that he was just a D-line coach. He's not
some guy whose been running the whole show for
20+ years. He hasn't been in the college game since
98, and NFL schemes and skills don't always transfer
well. I don't see too many NFL teams running the QB
read option.

Plus during his time as an NFL DC.. it's not like he sported nothing but shutdown D. His D teams in Cleveland and Dallas had some consistency issues.

Not saying he won't develop into a solid DC, but I think
it might be something that will need to develop if it is
going to work. I'm not sure he had the resume to
come in and immediately meet the expectations.

I don't know if he will or will not work, but the results have not come about as quickly as anyone hoped. I
gave him a pass on S1, but we've got to stop giving
up 30 plus in every big game. I know the offense
put the D in a bad place a few times, but jiminy crickets..
ya gotta come up big sometimes in difficult spots.

I say the jury is still out an CTG, but it's time to start
presenting some evidence for the defense.
