The recruiting finish line

Murray, I agree with you mostly. But I am looking at the bigger issue. You can find one or two diamonds in the rough. What you can't do is take mostly 3 stars and coach them up to beat UF and Bama.

When BVG was here, he didn't have UF and Bama as talented as they are now. In order to win the SEC, we need major impact players. Period. A Top 10 class sounds good until you realize that is about 6th in the SEC.

I'll say it one more time. We talk about stars are overrated, but remmeber this: 25% of 5 stars become All-Americans compared to 6% of 3/4 stars.

Just look at Bama's and Florida's class and count the 5 stars and 4 stars and extrapolate that out to 2013 when this class are seniors. Now, compare that to UGA couple of 4 stars/3 stars.

The math isn't good.

I'm not saying it's over for us, but I am saying that if this happens NEXT year, Richt will be gone in 2 years because we will not be beating UF/UT. We will be 8-4 again and again just because we don't have the athletes to compete. Sure, TG may be Lombardi, but in college football, talent wins 80% of the time.

We need to be like UF/Bama fans: DEMAND excellence, demand Top 5 finishes every year; demand an SEC Title every three years, and demand playing in the SEC titile game every other year.

Nothing less.

Agree BS. Plus the recruiting guru's are MUCH better now at rating these kids because of the national exposure they are getting.....the services they are selling......the TV programs they are hosting.....etc etc. 10-20 years ago the ratings between 3 and 5 stars were \"iffy\" at best. Today these guys really do there homework and are very accurate in their assessments of these kids (for the most part).

I'm just throwing this out to back up what BS is saying......you DO need the talent....it is a MUST or over time you will become a Vandy.

This horse is dead, no need to whip'em and sure can't ride'm. The time is at hand to see if the horse we have can race. Do we have coaches that can take 3/4 star players and make them look like 4/5 star players. If CMB and CTG can take this group and make REAL GADAWGS out them, this will be a fun year. The last few years have been fun but not near the fun we had when the two Davids played. I believe HCMR is ready once again to prove himself and his staff. Be positive with our DAWGS until they prove they can't get them there.

Go Dawgs:cheer:

BS, guess I will say the same thing you said to Murray. Agree with you on a lot of your points.

Take BVG for example and his tenure with UGA. Bama and UF had as much talent as any team in the SEC. Brings me to this point and many have discussed this here. At that point in time it was not as much who had the highest rated players, more like who had the better coaches. BVG had no problem moving on, says something about his ability to coach UP. Many of the other schools have since changed leadership and have also improved COACHING.

UGA has had outstanding recruiting classes for many seasons in the recent past. Top five and top ten classes, according to the talking heads that rate these young men. What happened that prevented us from winning a MNC? My opinion, again, coaching. During that period of time, we were not sixth or so on the recruiting scale in the SEC.

Another point to question . . . . when these high school players enter college, regardless of high school ratings, one has not a clue as to how that young man will turn out. I read your statistics and won't argue that point as posted. We have a DE rated very highly, Stripling, 6-6 and less than 220 pounds. What happens to his body when he hits the training table and the weight room? He becomes an entirely different player. Weight room and training table are also COACHED. Young folks come in not rated as high as some, but by the time graduation or NFL lure comes, some are far ahead of the recruit that had that 5 star rating.

Coach Richt is more aware than any of us as to his status at UGA. First thing he did was release a person that should never have been DC, much less DB coach. Here was a person that had STAR players that could not cover a toilet on many occasions. That is the truth and we all witnessed it for too long. Not players abilities in my opinion, lack of COACHING.

Coach Grantham hired from one of the better organizations in all of football, agree or disagree. Successful defensive team that had a tremendous rapport with Coach Grantham. Now he is a Dawg and has stated openly for all to see . . . . we will blitz, linebackers will not be backing up, they will be head hunting. Who does this successful coach want for his DB's, Coach Lakatos. According to all I have read, another head hunting coach. Has some history with CG.

Sometimes it is hard to argue with statistics, however fresh in my feeble old mind is being coached economically by a Secretary of the Treasury, that says . . . . Don't do as I do, do as I say do. Coach Geithner will surely take us to the promised land. . . .

Closing, agree that Coach Richt has a lot to be aware of. If he had not made the changes that he made on the defensive side of the ball, I would have put my two cents worth out there also. If the players coming out of school this year choose/chose other schools, fine. Guess what, next year the players will be just as good, if not better. UGA has an upcoming year to change styles and impress. UGA will always get its share of STAR ATHLETES.

Again, Coach Richt got the message. Proof: Coach Grantham/Coach Lakatos and probably someone else to be added when the Super Bowl is over this weekend.

Go Dawgs!!

Buc.....this year's class may turn out to be a blessing in disguise anyway. What did we sign....18? Well that leaves us with extra scholarships for 2011 and what I understand is that the 2011 crop of players coming out are BY FAR better than this year's. So, having the opportunity to sign about 28 next year looks very appealing to me. We have the players to put on the field this year.....bunch of talent in Athens.
