CMR in Miami appears on the surface to be a great story. Homecoming of the long lost, under-appreciated alumni QB turned coach, taking the reigns of a troubled program that is chasing its ghosts of twenty years ago and needing to be re-branded as a classy institution. Who better than Mark Richt to do that?
Yeah, then reality sets in. Richt chose the wrong school if he thinks he's going to change the culture in Miami. He might improve it, but he's not going to cure it. I agree with Buc. If Richt is going to employ a gestapo to rigorously spy on and enforce every single regulation and make examples out of every player by suspending whoever is out past curfew or takes a couple of snaps off the bong after a long practice, he's going to be very hard pressed to build a program there. Players coming to the "U" will be in a metropolitan area that doesn't bode well towards fostering the atmosphere to build "Mark's Moral Warriors." Not to mention that the "U" is in stiff competition with FSU, UF, USF, UCF and even FAU for recruiting wars. Yes, the Richt name will pull down some respect and he'll still be a recruiting force, but let's face it, Miami isn't the marquee draw that Georgia is.
The upside is that there will not be the immense pressure out of the gate on Richt to perform. They're going to give him a minimum five year cushion to do his thing, and a solid 7 to 9 win season is going to be a massive improvement in rebuilding the image of a program that has been crestfallen for years now. He'll lull them to sleep with expecting their patience while he works to transform the culture there and picks up some good recruits.
All that said, I'm happy for Mark. I hope this is what he truly wanted rather than what he felt he needed to do. He could have taken a year off and drastically upped his stock. I just hope it pans out for him to something he desires and the "U" is happy with.
@Wartdawg,
Completely agree with your assessment of not liking the playoffs. I was/am a BCS man through-and-through. And the iron-clad argument I give to people as to why I am usually leaves them with no response and no chance to argue otherwise with me. They just say, "oh yeah, but I find it more exciting with a playoff."
