We were not derailed by the loss of Chubb... we were already half off the rails anyway. What did happen though was that the loss of Chubb forced Mark Richt to think, and that is what went ahead and revealed how far off the rails we really were.
Most coaches faced with the loss of a player of Chubb's caliber would have whipped out and used every other weapon in their arsenal, but Mark Richt did the opposite. Most coaches faced with a loss of a player like Chubb would have opened up the playbook, but Mark Richt did the opposite.
When Chubb went down, I did not panic at all. I said to myself that what we would do is expand the roles of KM and Douglas, keep Michel in his role, and keep on keeping on.
Richt instead opted to shove Michel into Chubb's 20+ carry role and leave KM and Douglas pretty much as they were before. So in addition to losing Chubb, we also lost the added dimension we had before with Michel being lined up all over the field. Meanwhile a very capable KM and BD still languished on the bench as if nothing had changed to move them up in the rotation.
In addition to that, Richt decides that maybe QHicks could give us something at tailback.. so he gives him some reps in practice... a fine idea indeed except for the fact that he took Hicks out of the game-plan at fullback, and then didn't even use him in the new role he said he was going to give him!
So here we sit... Michel being used in a way that makes him less effective. Two other very capable backs still sitting on the bench: our FB also missing in action.
On top of this.... where others would have used every other weapon we had, Richt et al also shelved our TE's and started being even more conservative in play calling!
I know guys.... it is a case study in absurdism, but you can't make stuff like this up.
God Bless and Go Dawgs
