Show marked improvement in SEC football, get on the coaching 'em up bus, and stay out of the way, maybe all will be forgiven. Give us more of the same old s--- and its adios amigo.
growl, read this post last night, knew that I wanted to say something, but it was getting late for this old gent. Slept on it and here I am again early the next day.
I honestly do not have a problem with your position. Have been there and done that. All of us know who and why we are, take that back, grantham has yet to figure that out.
If we look closely at the 2014 football schedule, there is a high probability of UGA having a successful year. Not the toughest schedule we have faced recently. Clemson at home. South Carolina loses their quarterback, and in my opinion, that is a huge loss. Much like the one we face. Clowney will not be making our left tackle(s) look like they are frozen in time. Rest of the schedule we have probably a better than break even chance against everyone we will play.
We basically have the entire defense returning, with depth, and that is with players on campus, not figuring the incoming recruits to add that much. Maybe here and there, but for the most part the returning players came in as highly rated players in top rated classes. Talent is on campus. The missing link was on defense, and the problem there has been partially fixed. The grantham way of doing things is gone, the Jeremy Pruitt way of doing things will step front and center. The Pruitt way looks good, has a “short time” background, but a background that includes being the defensive coordinator for a National Championship Team. He had more responsibility at FSU than he had at Alabama, so not saying too much about the other championships.
Brings me to this. Everyone has to make up their minds as to who they will back and like the most. For some it comes down to liking someone. Others go for the star athlete. What has been missing is a total team effort. Team effort not only applies to the players, the coaches are more responsible for what they get from the players.
Often our football team has been referred to as a roller coaster ride. If we look at that statement, pretty much tells a story. Win 10 or 11 games one year, come back and don’t come close to those numbers the next year. That as much as anything separates UGA from say Alabama.
At some point supporters of any team, not just UGA come to a fork in the road, a personal decision has to be made. I did that twice under the present head coach, both times he and I got back on the roller coaster, nothing really changed. Why has that happened? In my opinion we need to look no further than Nick Saban. Alabama loves football, wanted to return to greatness. What did they do? Easy answer for that.
Alabama gets top 5 classes every year, usually number 1 or 2. Athletes want to be a part of National Championships, that was plural, championships. Those top rated athletes go to Alabama and know that they are going to sit, their turn will come. Players choosing Alabama understand that the person they have been chosen to replace is just as good or maybe even better than they are. Saban does not break that rule, he understands the proper way to recruit and remain on the top.
An example of waiting their turn. Henry was in the same position at running back at Alabama. What did he do, sat basically and his turn came. Henry could have started at probably every other college in the nation as a freshman. That is not far from the truth. Henry played the waiting game in Tuscaloosa according to Saban's rules. He will reap the rewards for that. I call that coaching 'em up. Attitude adjustments are required for some, others recognize greatness.
While we get some flash and dash at UGA, our head coach has the lack of understanding that it takes to get off of the roller coaster. I am convinced that it will not change that much even with the new hires. Our head coach was lucky enough to land a head coaching job at UGA. He almost backed out because he thought and said he did not have the necessary experience. He has had just enough wins to prop himself up, but like last year, playing a tough schedule did not serve him well. Have heard all about the injury excuse(s). We were hit hard. Other teams were hit hard also, Florida for one.
Now I hear about having depth at running back. Want to continue to get banged up, keep recruiting a middle of the road offensive line. The offensive linemen play hard, play to their capabilities, but maybe we should ask this question. Would we rather have the offensive lines we have had in Athens under richt or the offensive lines that have played for Saban?
Again, my biggest problem with the followers of UGA football is one good year, not great year, extends the period of time that we will not play in the final four, or win a National Championship. Veteran team returning in 2014, almost guarantees that the media and BS coming from the Athletic Department keeps richt in Athens. For some that is good enough, and yes I am aware of those that think like that. I bleed Red and Black as much as those on the other side do, took me getting burned twice to get the hell off of that roller coaster that is good enough for some.
This is not meant to hurt feelings, although that is ok with me, just saying how I see things and my reasoning for wanting to see change where it will mean the most to our football team.
