Saban is a person I would think that could be referred to as a benchmark. Most would agree with that, there are some however as has been said several million times, don't like the way he manipulates (things). On this board since Saban took the reigns in Tuscaloosa many have said that including myself. The one person at that time on this board that said we should wake us was averagedawg. Talking about coaching ability. Appears averagedawg was ahead of his time.
Leads me to this . . . .
Saban makes a call to both players and coaches, he has amazing results, great return on (telephone investment). If Saban had wanted Grantham, is there any doubt that said defensive coach would not have taken up residence in Tuscaloosa?
What Nick Saban did was have a sit down with Kirby Smart and we can see how that turned out. The sit down I am referring to is not when KS was being courted by Georgia, it was at the beginning of Saban's rule in Tuscaloosa. Say again, if Nick Saban had wanted Todd Grantham, not Kirby Smart, it would have played out that way. What does that say to me? Not hard to figure, Saban does not play the "favorites" game, he chooses coaches that come to work and get the job done. Saban's fair haired child is Kirby Smart. Kirby Smart was Nick Saban's first choice, not his fourth or fifth. Kirby is still there and will remain in my opinion. Can't blame him, Saban saw something early and moved on it. That is what separates the best from those that are good or mediocre.
Thinking out loud again . . . .
