Just rewatched UT game and there were some things I thought I noticed about our D.
I should title this "why I blame coaching", lol
Actually if any of it is true... it's good news in that it explains some things, and may indicate small changes may produce big results.
We talked about how we seem to be tipping our blitz's, maybe we are tipping more.
I noticed several times when we gave up big pass plays it seemed UT ran the perfect play against our coverage... like they knew what we were running.
We gave up 31, but on UT score to tie at 24, we stopped them deep and they were punting, but there was a questionable encroachment call (we caused them to move) that took them from 4th and 6, punting to 4th and 1 and going for and getting it. On the 4th down play, the big pitch wide for the long run to get the ball well into our territory... we just about made them run that play with the way we lined up ridiculously bunched in tight. That pitch was the easiest call or check to you could ever want. Obvious play to run based on how we looked.
Good news.. if we are just not disguising what we are doing very well, that crap can be fixed.
Easier to fix than it is to fix players that are repeatedly making mistakes. We just have to do a better job disguising what we are doing in coverage, and help the pups do it with the look we give them. We can disguise better by just changing up our tendencies, and varying what coverages we run out of what formations. Don't think we're doing a good job with that, but that's a quick fix all on the coaches making the different alignment and coverage calls.
More on D....
Phantom TD happened as well... that might not should have been on the books in addition to the play noted above where the penalty and the 4th and 1 continues the drive for UT.
2 almost INT's.. tipped pass at the line and Swan almost got one on a wheel pass where he made a great play peeling off his coverage and going for the outside receiver running wide open down the sideline. That play, once again, looked like they called the perfect play against the coverage, but DS who has made some tackling mistakes this season, saved day by recognizing and dropping off his man.
The INT didn't quite happen, but we were this close to a change of possession there as well.
3rd and 4 in OT that they picked up... it wasn't really a player mistake... it was a great call with the bunch formation. Easy pickens' to run the curl and squat out of the 3 man look they gave against the coverage we showed. Seeing that bunch, I think we should have checked into a zone blitz. People sure have used it against us. The lineman drops back into the exact passing lane where their WR squated.
On the big play on go ahead drive that made it 31-24 UT; the big gainer to the TE who lined up in the backfield..the DB totally forgot his responsibility. Quincy Mauger #20. That was one play definitely on the player, but with many other plays the sidelines didn't seem to be putting our players in a position to succeed.
That is actually fixable if they see the same thing and act on it. It's just how you combine alignments and coverages, and breaking our tendencies.
Plus looking at some almost plays, a phantom TD, and a stopped drive allowed to continue because of a real iffy penalty, and UT result
looks a lot different.
Coach 'em up
God Bless and Go Dawgs
