Wart, a lot to agree with in your comments above. Matter of fact, everything.
You said below . . . . and I firmly believe many of our problem areas are caused by the coaching staff.
We are no closer now than we were then. Pretty much the same crap. We're either making a bone head play, losing a game inexplicably, or being great at 2/3rds of the game but having one glaring weakness that kills us.
Released our first offensive coordinator, or he actually chose to go elsewhere. Replaced our second offensive coordinator, have not heard the reason(s) why from our head coach. That probably will not happen, do not really expect to hear “garbage talk”.
What I gather and am sitting on is this . . . . Kirby Smart needs to do his “thing” with recruiting and overseeing the defense. Kirby by most accounts is a “defensive specialist”, with which I don’t disagree. Kirby has made or okayed several calls in his four years that have not turned out well for the Red and Black. Meaning offensive calls that appear to be a coach that is “searching”.
Had the opportunity to watch Todd Monken operate in Tampa. Straight talk, Monken got into the quarterbacks head, not an easy thing to do, changed the offense from night to day. Did not stop the unnecessary “picks” that came with the teaching course, but did put points on the board. Winston would not still be in Tampa had not Monken worked with him.
Todd Monken will not only work with the quarterback(s) he also is hands on with receivers, both wide outs and tight ends. Spends just about as much time with the receivers as he does the quarterback(s). Have read some “stuff” being put out by the media that he is a passing guru, I agree, he is that. If however there is any doubt about running the football, be advised Monken relies heavily on a very good running attack.
From where I sit . . . . Kirby Smart while you have the final say, I would hope that you have made this choice of hiring Todd Monken to change the direction of your program. Actually the FANS program, those that have wanted to see change like this that dates back “decades”.
If Jamie Newman comes close to being as good as many in the “business” are saying, it was not only a stroke of good luck for Jamie Newman, it will benefit the FAN base that now has a chance to watch the TRUCKLOADS OF TALENT that again reside in Athens.
Have to add this little thingy . . . . Hiring of Todd Monken and recruitment of Jamie Newman have those doing the gator slap or chomp breathing a bit harder. Mullen and grantham did not expect or want to see this turn of events in Athens. They were already preparing to ring size their players for winning the SEC East. Grantham has always had a problem with defending the passing game, especially a strong passing game. Grantham thinks that sending an extra rusher or two is what defense is all about, looking forward to that in JAX in 2020.
