When Shaq Wiggins replaced Langley for the Tennessee game, could be that Grantham was beginning to shift his coaching strategy . . . . a little bit. Wiggins has a reputation of being skilled in man coverage. Understand that is high school and camps, but that was what he did in high school.
Comes to UGA and had a problem breaking into the lineup, too much "stuff" for him right off the bat. Takes me back to the playing "slow" that is often mentioned, by our players. Too much thinking, not reacting. Can't play "fast".
From the little I know about football, good cover man or men, gives the rushing defense a much better chance of disrupting the play.
Over the years, both in college and the NFL, think about the defensive backs that gain great recognition. Guarantee is that they are man cover players, not Tampa 2 players. Not really hard to understand. There is a time and a place for mixing up the defense, but overall, most of these young pups coming out of high school are playing in four man fronts with man coverage. There are exceptions, understand that, speaking about majority.
My hope is that Todd Grantham drops what appears to be ego/pride in some of his interviews and maybe looks closer at what his players can do when they play fast. Maybe the insertion of Shaq Wiggins is the first step.
Grantham said, and I will repeat his words, or close. Title football can be played at UGA, encompassing an area of 5 hours in any direction when recruiting. I bought into that, still have hope. Must say this, Grantham can't continue to give up the amount of points as is happening and win championships. Many of his players are from that 5 hour circle. What?
