New Thread for Missouri vs UGA

Have had some time to digest Saturday's win and go back and watch the game...just a few thoughts going into Mizzou:

I'm choosing to take the stance that my grandfather took in life...always happy, never satisfied. Translation; I'm HAPPY that we won, but I'm far less than SATISFIED with how we did it. I do think going back and watching the game again made me feel a bit better...especially about the defensive performance.

Offensively, a little less hype/adrenalin from AM and we're looking at a minimum of 2 to 3 more TD's. Other than that, I'm okay with what we did on that side of the ball...as has been pointed out here, the use of the FB's did seem a bit more prevalent, even if the execution of the play left something to be desired (think Samuel in the flat.) Like others, would like to see more contribution from/use of the TE's but that might be a direct product of AM going for the long ball rather than taking what's available underneath.

Defensively, we came out as fired up as we possibly could for what was basically a pre-season scrimmage. First series looked pretty solid and I think we went to sleep a bit after that. The long drives they had never would've happened had it not been for the legs of Zorich and I really think part of that was due to having 5 starters out (guys that were playing hard in their place, but maybe a little too amped up from lack of experience/playing time to focus on the mental side of the game, maintaining rushing lanes, etc.) Another thing I noticed was, outside of a few edge rushes from Jarvis, we didn't do much in the way of sophisticated blitz packages or even much to disguise our coverages...makes me think things were being kept under wraps and away from the eyes of the folks in Columbia, MO. Third quarter showed me two things...someone probably yelled, and yelled loudly during halftime, because Buffalo or not, holding a team to 23 yards in the quarter is pretty darn good. The other thing is again, Buffalo or not, Todd Grantham maybe one of the best DC's in the country when it comes to halftime adjustments.

What does it mean for this weekend? I think we see a completely different team, especially on the defensive side, than what we saw on Saturday. Even though it was Buffalo, their O-line was big...all pretty well over 300 lbs I believe. They may be a bit more athletic, but the Mizzou O-line will not have the size that Buffalo had, coupled with a few injuries along the line that Mizzou has had to deal with, should mean good things for Kwame and big John...keep a few of those interior linemen busy and Jarvis might live in Mizzou's backfield.

Another thing that's been crawling around the ol noggin today...I love what Richt/Grantham are doing with the suspensions. Someone noted this earlier and I tend to agree...if Tree and Rambo were definitely suspended, they probably would've announced those along with Vasser, Commings, etc. Them playing coy, along with the fact that those two guys are listed as starters on the depth chart released yesterday, makes me think we could see one or both on the field Saturday. I'll leave you with this, would probably be a good idea to keep a spy on Mizzou's QB whenever possible...can you think of a better person than Tree to do it?

I think/hope our D will be fine.

I'm not happy with the end result (23 points to a MAC team), but we've
got big time athletes and I feel pretty strongly that CTG knows what
he's doing both in practice and on the field during the game.

If they do what I feel they are capable of doing, we should be fine for
this game. I just want the O to control the ball enough to keep the
D fresh.

One of my colleagues here at work is a Kansas State fan (rabid). Outwardly, he says he supports UGA in this game. Inwardly, you KNOW he doesn't. He told me that stadium is going to be extra loud and boisterous, because the Cardinals game should be over in time for a lot of drunks to drive over to the UGA game.

I immediately reminded him that our team regularly plays in front of loud drunks in stadiums that hold 30,000 MORE drunks than Columbia, Missouri. That kind of settled him down a little. B)

GO DAWGS!!! GATA!!!!

Edit: Also pointed out that we had 20,000 more people in attendance to watch us play Buffalo than Missouri will have to watch this game. Kind of "sobering".

Isn't being a rabid KState fan the equivalent of being president of the
Ford Escort GT appreciation club?

One fact 99 times out of 100 holds true. If we are the better team, regardless of where the game is played, the outcome should fall in our favor. That goes for all teams.

Example of this. When we played, (you and I) at some point we were lined up against someone on the other side that really did not care who we were or whether our girlfriend, or other important people in our lives were in attendance.

If you are playing on the offensive or defensive line, you can bet at some point in your football life someone is going to kick your butt for the better part of four quarters. If the butt kicking is bad enough, usually you get some help from a teammate, if that is possible.

The Missouri coaches are very knowledgeable that Jarvis Jones plays for UGA. They are also aware that he lead the SEC in quarterback sacks last season. They are also aware that the tag of All American was bestowed on him. We all know that one person is not going to be able to control what Jarvis Jones does. He does not do that for one quarter, he plays grown man football for four quarters.

So, what does that present for our defensive team? Someone on the offensive side is going to have to help a fellow player out with Jarvis, makes me think that they are now playing two on one. If I am on the UGA defensive side puts a huge smile on my face, because Jarvis is not the only player that has exceptional football skills. Grantham will feed on this, for sure.

That scenario plays out both ways, and from all I have been able to read, the player that made the statement that “old man football” is played by UGA, seems to have solid football credentials. Sheldon Richardson spent some time at a Junior College, just like Jenkins and many others have. While he might have a big mouth, to come out publicly and say what he said, he will be worth watching. Show time, have to back those words up. Sheldon Richardson from all I can gather could have played at many D1 schools, same was the case for Jenkins. Player lined up against Richardson had better bring his “A” game, feel sure Sheldon Richardson will. He drew the line in the sand, and he will try and make someone appear to be an "old man".

Said it a couple of times recently . . . . Hope that the officials let these guys play, this game could be a classic and many young football talents in high school, especially those looking to play in the SEC will focus on this game.

Think maybe Saban registered high with young players not committed that watched his team take Michigan apart? We know the answer to that one. That is what it takes to make a program move forward. We are not there yet, seem to have a lot of the tools necessary to move forward, sorry, we ain’t Alabama at this point. Few college football teams are. FACT.

My feeling is this, whether it matters or not . . . . Think it has been mentioned in this thread that we all have opinions. Lord knows I do, lots of them. Start with a question. Why is Alabama winning at the pace they are? My answer, they have coaches that know how to get them there. Ask many of the players on Alabama’s team why they chose the Tide, answer will be 99 times out of 100 . . . . . Gives me the greatest chance of playing in the NFL. Ask many young commits that have yet to step on campus, we will get the same answer.

We know that UGA players make it to the NFL in abundance also, so why are the folks from Tuscaloosa so far ahead of us . . . . . Great coaches come along not very often. Saban is a great coach. There are many really good coaches and not all of them are in the SEC, appears that Lane Kiffin is headed in that direction. Like him or not, he will end up being special. Lots of talent at his disposal, and he knows how to get the best from them.

Sometimes I have problems with how some of our players are handled by our coaches. That can be bothersome. Richard Samuel’s name always pops up when questioning what happened to the young pup that showed so much potential in high school. We all love the young man, and what is the reason for that? Most would say because he is a team player. If the truth was ever told, Richard Samuel is that and more. Nice little game he had against Florida, got the monkey off of our backs, at least temporarily. PP'd a lot of Florida folks off, got their ranker even higher against a one time Bulldog now coaching the Gators.

Back to the first paragraph. We are rated at #7 in the nation, last polling. Don’t remember seeing Missouri in the top echelon. If we believe we are better, is that because of the players or the coaching the players have received. Most say this is going to be a close game, at one time I did not think so, but the closer the game gets, the more butterflies I have flying around in my stomach. Pinkel and his system have me on edge. For whatever reason, and if one of them is we don’t have our full compliment of players, that is not Pinkel’s fault. That one stays in house and closed mouthed is how Mark Richt has chose to handle it. Stats say UGA should win, stats do not always prove to be the deciding factor. I sincerely hope that we are not out coached and along with that, out played.

Go Dawgs . . . coach'em up! :)
