While most of us realize and have for sometime now, the offensive line does have most of UGA's supporters eyes directly on them. Buffalo from what I could see of their defense were playing games in the "gaps", not unlike what Grantham likes to do, and does.
Theus winning the right tackle spot as a freshman should tell all of us something about the failures if we choose to call them that in offensive thinking the past few seasons. Any time a team needs as much help as we have needed in the past few seasons really needs to do some soul searching.
Theus winning the battle for the tackle position, and if we take it a bit further, Todd Gurley probably took over the running back spot as the number one. Another freshman. Talk was prior to the game opening whistle Rome would or could be "that" tightend that follows in a long list of NFL bound tightends. Basically another freshman, as Rome spent much of his time with the basketball team.
Looking over the long list of offensive players, a bit surprised that AM had to run for his life a few times. wlayton, guess I have to phrase our offensive deficiencies thusly . . . . our leaders have over the past several years shown "huge flaws" in their recruiting and coaching efforts where the offensive line is concerned. The chapter on Will Friend has not been written yet, so I point a finger in the direction of recent history.
Love seeing the effort by the two freshmen running backs. Here is hoping that they don't run into the same kind of thing that Marcus Lattimore had happen. Loved what I saw from the "rookies" but here is hoping that they are used wisely, this is their first SEC season.
"Used wisely" can mean using the tightends or tightend to relieve some of the pressure felt by our offensive line. Couple of passes over the middle, under the cover two has a way of gaining that extra second or two for the offensive line and quarterback to make safer decisions. Sorry, can't put that much on the backs of the offensive line at this point, first game and in my opinion, the mistakes were "coaching mistakes". Basically, it is simple math, we just need a "tutor" at this point.
One thing to send quarterbacks to the NFL, and apparently with the amount of long passes that I saw in the game, Mike Bobo seems to relish in the fact that he is the "quarterback" coach along with his title of "Offensive Coordinator". Mike played quarterback in college, does not seem to recognize that fullbacks can do more than "get in the way" of pass rushers. Sorry, did not see anything yesterday that comes close to having me think we are ready to back up the talk I have heard in the off season.
Lastly, when Mark Richt came off of the field at halftime, he was as upset as I have ever seen the man. Question . . . . who is he mad at? Does he anticipate changes other than laying it all on the players . . . . just asking.
Not giving up, just looking closer at details. Go Dawgs, all old farts like me can do is call it like I see it, along with many others that I have read in this thread.
Edit: Just picked this clip up. After listening, would suggest to Mark Richt's concern about ball control, might want to try that with our offense rather than trying to hit a home run so often. Fullbacks, tailbacks, two tightend sets, there are ways to change the number of plays/time the opposition gets. Speak to Mike about that Mark. Just saying . . .
