What happened to the East?

ogredawg, we have been through this same situation for more than a season now. Several seasons as a matter of fact. Everyone wants the Dawgs to win. Then when we hit a bump in the road, those same folks come back up and don't sound like they did on the "short" winning streak.

None of the folks on this board that post regularly are seeing anything different this season. Take that back, there has been a change on the defensive side of the ball. Will post a short piece that I borrowed from the AJC that really backs up what is going on with our football team so far this year.

Quote from Grantham.

“There’s 11 spots out there,” said Grantham, in his second season with Georgia since being hired away from the Dallas Cowboys. “Each Monday we’ll know who’s available. Based on who’s available we’ll figure out where we need to play guys by combination to give us the best chance to win.”

Gilliard, Grantham admitted, may be hard to move. Plus, he doesn’t know yet what he has in Ogletree.

“The plan is to get him out there next week and work a little bit and I’ll have a better idea then,” he said. “But I haven’t seen him do anything yet. I’ve been around him in meetings and on the field this week. That’s all I have. But the reports have been good.”

The offense is riding the coat tails of the defense, as Richt has said in so many words. Playing safe, that sort of thing.

Best I can figure is Richt knows that he has not ran our team the way it should have been. Looks like he is playing catch up. That is not bad, except for the fact that coming from the ACC and Bobby Bowden football, it was more flash and dash over there. Does not work that way in the SEC, as has been said close to 100 times recently in these threads.

Some will look at facts, others will drink the kool aid. JAX and AUBURN will be a better guide for who we are and where we are. Too early to discuss Tech at this point. They are ranked 11th last time I looked, and Paul Johnson is throwing the football more these days. Amazing how some coaches can and will change things.

I guess most are just happy to be winning after last year Buc.....it will take more than wins for me to jump back on the CMR/CMB offensive juggernaut (naught is better word me thinks)....even with our OL this talent on the offensive side of the ball is just not coached up to play 4 full qtrs of football...but I digress.....I really hate to look ahead of Vandy who may suprise us.....but if Brantley is back for the gaytors and our lackluster offensive no show offense for 2/3 of the game we will be in for a long day in Jax......and there has been way too many of those over the past 10 years....

The link below is the reason that my glass is half full. Been on the stump since Grantham came to Athens. Grantham means business, glad that he wears it on his sleeve, just like another coach that I have/had great respect for.

Players in this day and time are buying into the same product Grantham is selling and the players some years back bought into another coach's same way of teaching. Disciplinarians. :)

Great link Buc. If I may, it makes me think of a scene in one of my favorite movies, Bull Durham. Crash is in the shower after a loss. Coach comes in and says hell of a dinger, too bad it was all for naught. Then he goes on to complain about teams lack of effort and commitment. CD says "Scare them. They're kids. Scare them"

I believe this bunch of players fear and respect CTG as they should. GATA

TN Dawg guess it is a bit like learning to read and write.

Goes back a ways but remember how proud I was of myself when I could go through my multiplication tables without missing or getting one of the tables wrong. Served me well the rest of my life.

Think that the same thing applies here, these guys see that Grantham's teachings actually work. Just have to be applied and there are different ways of teaching success. It however can be a "life lesson".

One thing that Grantham said more than once last season, though he seldom repeats himself. When the system is understood, the players will play faster. I see that, most of the players see that. Some might have a tougher time learning the schemes, however when the light goes on, it is a beautiful thing to see.

Go Dawgs . . . coach'em up!

Yep-real good read Buc & a perfect analogy TNDawg. What a great sports movie!

Bout time somebody put the "fear of failure" into our beloved Dawgs! I'm really digging Grantham's style guys. It's only going to get better w/more of HIS recruits coming into the program & with the youngsters gaining more playing time in the 3-4 scheme. Can CTG also be the butt kicker for the offense & special team players too? I'm telling yall, if our defense continues to improve & does it against better offenses (Florida, Auburn, & especially the NATS), I'm going to be barking that the Junkyard Dawgs are back! It's just refreshing to see visible improvement on at least 1 side of the ball for the first time in a long time now.

Side note, did anybody notice this article by Chip Towers in the AJC?

ATHENS — One of the more welcome sights at Georgia’s practice Tuesday was a guy in a green jersey running by himself in an end zone.

Starting inside linebacker Alec Ogletree, out since the first quarter of the first game of the season, was in full pads and running — quite swiftly and fluidly, in fact — through a series of speed and agility drills under the watchful eye of sports medicine director Ron Courson.

“Ogletree is looking really good,” coach Mark Richt said during his weekly news conference earlier Tuesday. “We don’t think there is any question at all that he’ll be ready for the Florida game.”

Ogletree was the talk of preseason camp because of the athletic ability he brought to his inside linebacker position from strong safety, where he started as a freshman in 2011. But he broke a bone in his foot early against Boise State. Not coincidentally, the Broncos were able to exploit Georgia’s defense late in the second quarter and early in the third quarter in that 35-21 loss.

The trouble regarding Ogletree’s return is the Bulldogs’ defense has developed quite nicely in his absence. Even after losing fellow starting inside linebacker Christian Robinson to an ankle injury in Game 2, Georgia’s linebacker corps has been a strength on a unit that is ranked sixth nationally and third in the defensive-minded SEC heading into Saturday’s game at Vanderbilt (7:08 p.m., FSSO).

Robinson has been back for the past two games, but has not returned to the starting lineup. “Backups” Michael Gilliard and Amarlo Herrera, who were working with the first-string defense again Tuesday, have played too well in their absence to unseat.

Gilliard, who has started for Robinson the past four games, was named SEC defensive player of the week after a 12-tackle effort against Tennessee that included a game-clinching sack. It was the fourth consecutive game he led the Bulldogs in tackles, and he now leads the Bulldogs with 40. Herrera has started the past four games and is tied for fourth on the team with 24 tackles.

I posted something a week or two ago about how impressed I'd been with our backup Linebackers, especially Mike Gilliard & Amarlo Herrera. Seems that I'm not the only one. I love it that CTG hasn't just GIVEN the starting job back to Christain Robinson & it don't sound like he's going to treat Ogletree's return any differently. Gilliard was just named SEC defensive player of the week & Herrera is a TRUE freshman & playing like a bad @ss. Herrera also was the one that caused the FUMBLE in the 1st quarter against UT that the blind refs blew the call on even after the replay showed the ball was loose. I'm really starting to get stoked about our defense fellas!

GATA Coach Grantham!
