A View of Football

Goose, as a young puppy in the South in the 50's, the Redskins were the "team" that most of us below the Mason/Dixon watched and pulled for. My favorite player then was Eddie Lebaron, quarterback. He probably stood ever bit of 5'7" and captured the hearts of many. Now any quarterback under 6'2" or so is considered height deprived, and I suppose that is true using the NFL's formula. However, there are those that come along and show that the height table is not the only factor involved in being a quality quarterback. AM comes to mind. Brees is another.

Think that Richt has said or some reports say that Grantham would be choosing the coach replacing Belin. Interesting to me is we hire a defensive coach with many NFL years of experience. On the offensive side we hire a offensive coach with a lot less experience. This is not a knock on Friend, just an observation on my part. Both of these new coaches need to do their jobs and get the Red and Black back on track.

Buc, Yes the Skins of the 50's vs the NYG - Sam Huff, Big Rosie, Andy Robo. Games in the snow at the old Yankee Std and Polo Grounds. and Y.A. Sunday on the tube and Mom cooking Sunday supper. Ike in the Whitehouse. Those were the real, real old days.

Hiring Friend may have come down to dollars and having them to spend on the "D" side of the ball. We have said it before defenses win NC's. Your point that every coach needs to do their job is spot on. !! Go Dawgs

wlayton, Clowney reminds me so much of Simeon Rice that played for the Tampa Bay team when Tampa won the Super Bowl. Simeon was a great pass rusher, there is a reason for that. Warren Sapp played team ball and Rice got those sacks. Could be wrong, but I think I see some of the same traits between Rice and Clowney, they love those sacks, but cannot defend against the run. A really good offensive coordinator will see that and expose the "wound".

Simeon Rice was listed at 6'5" and weighed 260. I never bought the 260, and if you take a good look at Clowney, it will be hard for him to take his weight to 260 and be the same DE he was in high school.

This is what thriller said and I totally agree. The statement below is what I was referring to when I said we have those on this board that can contribute . . . . because they do understand the game.

If I had to coach against Drew or Clowney, I would run the ball right at them. Send a 330 pound guard at full speed at 'em, and see if they can solve that "mass times velocity" equation well enough to still bring down my 210 pound junior running at 4.5 speed. Aaalllll game long. IMHO, very few freshmen can make THAT transition. On the other hand, remember that the reason the SEC is the UNDISPUTED best, is because of the Clowneys and Drews (and Crowells)!

Agree....but you gotta be able to hit him first. People said similar things about Pollack....couldn't hit the guy.

yankeedawg1, for sure you have the history correct. Y A Tittle . . . . gutsy old fart. :)

One of my all time favorites, Sam Huff. One of the linebackers in that period of football that had a serious mean streak. Participated in "The Greatest Game Ever Played" in 1958. Colts and Giants were the true beginning of where the NFL is now in all of its glory.

Interesting point on the Friend hiring.

Hey guys.......if P. Manning wore high tops, doesn't he look just like Johnny U on the field? Walks like him, slumped shoulders like him, mannerisms are like him and even throws like him. Is it just me or have ya'll noticed that too?

Hey Manning.....go get some high tops. :woohoo: :woohoo:
