ogredawg, here's a little more from that same article. Not exactly the kind of stuff that gets the optimism rolling, huh?
"Matt Johns, who was mostly behind Greyson Lambert last season, has passed Lambert as the No. 1 signal caller.
"Matt did the best job," said UVa head coach Mike London. "He was the most productive, he was the most efficient. It wasn't close. If it was close, we'd still be talking about going into August camp with two guys still fighting for the same position.
"But Matt clearly did what he was supposed to do and led our team in a way that we think a quarterback should be able to play in order for us to be successful."
Offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild said the QB positioning is still "a fluid situation" and the depth chart reflects if the Cavaliers were "playing a game tomorrow, which we're not."
Virginia post-spring football depth chart
A look at the Virginia football team's depth chart after the completion of spring practices.
Johns appeared in nine games at quarterback last season and made three starts. The rising redshirt junior completed 55 percent of his passes for 1,109 yards with eight touchdowns to five interceptions.
"At the end of the day, he just graded out slightly higher, was more productive [than Lambert]," Fairchild said. "We felt like that he deserved, at least at this point, to be No. 1 on the depth chart."
Lambert, also a rising redshirt junior, started all nine games he played in last season, completing 59 percent of his passes for 1,632 yards and 10 touchdowns to 11 picks.
"Right off the bat, [Lambert told me] 'I'm going to win that spot back,'" London said. "You want him to think like that, you want him to say things like that." "
I guess Lambert changed his mind about winning that spot back - seems to think it'll be easier to win a spot in Athens.
