Mike, agree with you on several points. Think a lot of the back and forth could be easily repaired if Richt was a decision maker. I would refer to your comment about being on track when mentioning Damon and Willie. Damon was clearly walking all over Mark Richt and that was proven to be a fact when McGarity came on board. First thing was to get Mark Richt's attention and let him know that something had to change, and the change was very simple. Mac said to Richt, tell me what "you" want and how "you" can effectively do your job as head coach. There was a meeting of the minds between a white collar administrator and a blue collar football coach. That was not happening between Richt and Evans. Very positive move in moving the program forward.
One of Richt's major short comings (my opinion) is trying to be everything to all people. It has never and will never work that way whether coaching football or being the pastor in a Baptist Church. Don't mean to offend anyone, first thought was Baptist, could be any belief that anyone has and believes in. If Mark Richt does not recognize or believes that Mike Bobo is on the right track, then it does show a weakness in Richt's judgment. That statement however is coming from me, Mark might think that Mike Bobo is doing the right thing as offensive coordinator. Mark would definitely be in the minority if polled on that point. Not just this board, but the overall on all media outlets. My opinion is that if Mark Richt steps up and and either hires or takes on the business at hand when it comes to offensive football, meaning handling the coaching responsibilites, then he has made a huge step forward. I do not feel that it is McGarity's place to take care of that particular situation. McGarity told Mark Richt that he would back him in his efforts, all McGarity asked for was a competent head coach. That in my opinion is more than fair, especially when we are talking about a head coach that has been on campus for eleven years.
I believe that Mark Richt has drawn a line in the sand when it comes to Mike Bobo. My reason for saying that is looking at the history of Mark Richt as a head coach. He had to relent on Willie and his good friend that was the head of Strength and Conditioning. Mark Richt however earlier in his head coaching career had no problem with BVG leaving. Not sure he could have prevented that, but his selection process after BVG left was less than admirable. There have been a lot of coaches come and go. I also understand that happens in programs everywhere. Look at Papa Joe.
Agree that no one on this board is either a coach or player for UGA. That is what brought me into this part of the thread. Neither you, nor I or anyone else can say with certainty what happened yesterday in the Outback Bowl. Believe you made a couple of comments about what should have happened, but as you suggest, we are not privy to what really happened from a coaching standpoint.
There have been comments made on this board that Coach Todd Grantham does not have the necessary experience or know how to be a head coach. Think the term used was he needed more time in grade, seasoning is what I guess that means. That talk coming from folks that don't have a clue. They saw one explosion in Nashville and based their less than knowledgable experience on one episode. If we follow that way of thinking, guess Franklin should not be the head coach at Vanderbilt, seem to remember him showing his butt not only to CTG but to a UGA football player. Guess that could apply to Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State, seem to remember a serious tirade on his part. He still coaches and many thought his team should be in the MNC game.
One last thought that I will post using your term. If Mark Richt surrounds himself with the right people, he will have made great strides. My major disagreement is that Mark Richt has to be forced into those situations. That in my mind is not leadership. College football is a huge business and anyone that thinks differently are either too young or too far off base to understand. It is a business for the players, coaches and the University of Georgia. Football games have to be won and that takes leadership, in this old farts opinion. I truthfully don't see or believe that Mark Richt has those qualities. If he does, he has a strange way of showing leadership qualities. Again, McGarity does not need to do Mark Richt's "dirty work", that falls on the shoulders of the head coach. My best guess is that Mike Bobo is back next season. What say you?
