I think he thought running wide would use up time, but had little chance of actually picking up
yardage. If I'm going to risk a QB/RB exchange and a possible tackle, I'm going to go ahead and
run it up the gut 3 times. That was your chance to pick up the 1st down and run the clock out
never giving the ball back to them. Running wide wasn't going to do it, and we were not going to
be able to use enough time to run out the clock anyway. It was RS in the game out of necessity,
and RS is not going to do much for you running side to side. I would not have RS running side to
side. That pretty much guaranteed you were going to give Vandy one last shot with the ball in
their hands.
I agree you never imagine you are going to have a punt blocked, but our special teams have been
less than stellar all year. I'm already risking a QB/RB exchange and tackle where we can cough it
up anyway, so I'm going to run 3 times up the gut. If I pick up just one first down, then I kneel
on the ball and don't turn the game over to my special teams or defense. Running RS side to side
was once again playing not to lose instead of seizing victory when the ball is in your hands. On
3rd down with 8-9 in the box we ran straight up the gut and picked up 5 yards. Too bad it was
3rd and 14 because of plays 1 and 2 instead of 3rd and 3.
That one point may have been picky if you look at it as an isolated incident, but it isn't.
He's always playing it safe, and not going for the throat. Me.. however you slice it Richt played
in such a manner that was going to inevitably put the ball back in their hands. I would have played to not put the ball back in their hands. Once again.. as an isolated incident, no big deal... but it's not really an isolated incident.
