From Athens-"Things to Ponder"

ogredawg, think that we are on the same page. Tired of excuses, you are definitely on point there. Those excuses seemed to be accepted by those that were running the program. Reason I say that is because those excuses were being passed on to us by those running the program.

What I am feeling is Grantham is not a yes man. He has taken the bull by the horns and gone about the business of "getting" what "he" wants to make the defense whole again.

Never in a million years will I believe that the only person in Richt's ear was McGarity. Grantham is a stand up guy and he expects no less from those that not only coach for him, but play for him also.

I refuse to believe that we do not have talent that can be coached up. At this point it is probably a bit like military training. They tear you down, then coach you up to play in a system that requires team play.

I do not want to think that Grantham would take Ogletree from the defensive backfield and not have a plan to fill that gap. Might not fill the hole with as much talent as Ogletree has, but there is talent to step in and play the position.

You make a very good point about WM and his coaching style. Best I remember, several of the players on that side of the ball for the last two or three years had some remarks about the style of defense they were playing. Not a damn thing wrong with a cover 2, unless you have a coach that cannot teach it. WM did not know how to run a cover 2. Too damn easy to get off on WM. Just glad that we have folks on the D side that understand football and don't collect unearned pay checks.

Allow me this comment. SS knows that he and Grantham are going to go head to head. SS whether he wanted to or not had to bring Garcia back. Good on Grantham, he has Spurrier's attention. Who knows, maybe the offensive coaches will show some backbone. Anyone that thinks that Grantham does not have a game plan ready for SS is not paying attention. I know, Boise State first. South Carolina a MUST.

Saban plays to win. Fans and alumni expect that. Nuff said.

wlayton, you and I both know the power of UF. Living here for many years, there is a lot of pressure on Florida high school football players to get on board. Next time a Florida automobile passes you or you are behind one, check the tag. Nine of ten will have UF on it somewhere. Much as I hate to say it, SS changed UF football. FACT. Hope that will not be the case with South Carolina.

It is a must that Richt/Bobo show some offensive prowess this year. They slip, Muschamp and his offensive coordinator Charlie Weis will eat our lunch.

Buc.....the safety position is STILL the problem child. Incoming freshman can NOT step in and fill that position at this level. That position is so critical for being in THE right position. Can't trust a freshman no matter how good he was in HS. He can be the best S in the country and not understand coverage schemes at this level.

Big concern.....better get to the QB.

got to agree with ya wlayton.....corners are a concern also no matter how much people are talking them up.....our cover guys have been below par the last 2 years.....along with the poor tackling......agree pressure the QB....

ogredawg......I feel pretty good about our corners. They have speed and have had enough playing time and experience. Safeties have GOT to maintain their coverage scheme positioning or we are dead meat.

Also agree with you (as does everybody probably).....show me on the freakin field!!!!

the corners ability to tackle after the catch and on the wide type runs hurt us very bad last year......you have to learn to tackle before you learn to cover.......

Going back to your roots now ogredawg. Players from the Valdosta knew how to tackle. A lot of this shoulder tackling and not wrapping up would have cost someone laps and wind sprints back in the day.

This Corner Back and Safety discussion has me looking around and scratching my head a bit. Below on the first line are the incoming players for 2011.

Second list are the players that are already in uniform. Some of the incoming players and a couple of the vets have been mentioned on the offensive side also.

One would think that our coaches could come up with a starting 4 or 5 that should be better than average. 14 players listed below. ogredawg is making me think.

Nick Marshall, Malcolm Mitchell, Damian Swann, Corey Moore, Chris Sanders.

Brandon Boykin, Sanders Commings, Jakar Hamilton, Jordan Love, Derek Owens, Bacarri Rambo, Branden Smith, Shawn Williams.
