I am certain that many here have their own dawg related rituals. Oddly enough, for me, I always grew a full beard every fall/winter and shaved in the spring. As rituals go, I began to associate the timing of my beard growth around the first loss of my beloved dawgs. As a UGA student from 83-87, Coach Dooley provided many a season of chilly cheeks, before I sprouted hair. Coach Goff and Coach Donnan were, for the most part, icons for early growth. There was a season here or a season there that prolonged the process, but it was not uncommon for me to have a full and nicely trimmed beard by Halloween.
Then came Richt and almost immediately my ritual became later and later into the fall season. Sadly, the tipping point always seemed to be around the last of October, but you could bet, with damn near certainty, that it would not be before then....Well, you could!
Now that I am older and I am less inclined to grow a warming swath of grey; much to Ms. NC_Dawgs delight, but I look back upon that ritual of mine and realize that a circle has been completed. We are now, where we were, looking for answers, pointing at assistants and blaming youthful athletes. It's all to mundane and we as the BullDawg Nation, once again find ourselves on familiar, yet uncomfortable ground.
Allow me to illustrate, here are a few quotes, see if you can tell who said each. "I’ve been waiting 55 years to be the head coach of a football team that has this much potential, and I guarantee you that we’re going to get it done." , "It's not like we got shellacked and run off the field" , "...the things that we were doing when we were in the top 10, we're still doing those same things." , "That's two years in a row we've gotten down like the Titanic,..."That's as close to looking like the game was fixed as I've ever seen, the way we were jumping offsides and making a lot of silly mistakes."...
The first is fairly well known and perhaps familiar to a few, and clearly Jim Donnan. The next 3???...That's Mark Richt for the first two and Donnan for the last...Am I the only one who see's similarities? Moreover, those two CMR quotes were expressed following our loss to Arkansas. Have we collectively circumvented the sphere of reason where opponents like Arkansas and Mississippi State are considered "big" games? Seriously??...
There comes a time when diminishing returns signal a need for change. I believe we are now entering that period of recognizing that which we've feared for some time. Whether we are destined to repeat our history, both good or bad, depends on our courage and determination to demand more than mediocrity and we've been mired to our axles long enough!
GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
