Monte Kiffin is definitely a great DC. He was years ahead of everyone else. However, there are plenty of guys out there to get the job done. Everyone speaks of Monte like he is a god. It is not like he has brought a sorry defense back to prominence. UT has always had a good D. People dread playing UT because they play good defense. The advantage that UT has over anyone else is MK's loyalty to his son. There have been some great DC's in the SEC over the last 10 years. They just all dream of being a HC. MK is good, but his schemes are not that much better than JC. The most significant change that UT has made is ATTITUDE!!!!!!! I will agree with everyone else we need a new DC. However, the thing that has disappointed me this year is our lack of ATTITUDE. I would almost be willing to say that if we had attitude then we could overcome CWM's faults.

The basis of Monte Kiffins genius is threefold. First and foremost he has the ability to teach good fundamental techniques of any defensive position to any player including lower primates. Second, he has the ability to teach assignment based defense to any player of any position on any defense including lower primates. Third, is his ability to understand the opposing teams offense and tweak his assignments to negate their strength while attacking the weakness. Take away those three things and he would be just another average DC.

I am not saying that he is not great. I do believe though that he has inherited some good athletes. UT has always played great D. JC is a very good DC. I do not know why, but UT had lost their attitude these last couple of years. Everyone will say that they were very competitive with UF and BAMA though. UF lost their OC last year and a lot of firepower to the NFL. We all know that BAMA wins with their D. Their offense is always just good enough. Auburn handed them their rears. MK is very good, I just think that UT is in good shape defensively, because MK doesn't want to be a head coach. I am just saying that there are plenty of good DC's out there who can get the job done. Our only problem is that a new DC comes in and changes our attitudes. He gets a lot of attention and then he decides to pursue a head coaching job. I just hope that we can find that DC who is happy being a coordinator.

That's kind of why I suggested Spagnola. He was the DC who built the NY Giants into a formidable defense. After they beat the patriots to win a superbowl he took a job as HC with the Rams. But he isn't cut out to be a HC and he isn't doing a very good job. It's quite possible that he has reached the point in his life where his ticket to happiness is being worshipped as the best DC ever in a place like Athens.
