Who would make a good DC?

Who can we possibly get as DC that can compete with Monte?

I'm thinking coach Spags (ex DC for NY Giants). He isn't cutting it as HC for the RAMs. Maybe we could convince him to come be a defensive demi-god in athens?

I'm still on the Kirby Smary bandwagon, myself. Nobody will ever have a DC as good as Monty in the SEC for at least the next several years, but we should aim to at least have one of the top 3 or 4 in the league so that if our offense manages to get back on track, we don't have to worry about putting up over 30 and still losing.

I'm a big fan of not even having an offensive coordinator and just letting Richt call the plays. He was hired to bring the FSU of the 90s offense to UGA. And for the first couple of seasons, we had that offense. Richt is at his best when he's a hands on coach. The program started going down hill when he embraced the mentality that a head coach's job is to be like the CEO of a company.

Hire Kirby Smart as DC and have Richt assume OC duties and call the plays. That will put us back where we need to be.

IMO - not smart.

a). Kirby Smart isn't in same league as Monte. If somebody starts running WCO against his defenses they will shred it. Which we could have and should have done when we had Stafford, Moreno, and Green on same team.

b). Why would he leave Bama?

c). We need someone with a more proven record. With the infusion on Saban and Kifin we need to think superbowl or better quality coaching. Amatuers like Bobo and Martinez aren't going to cut it in this conference anymore.

Well, other than Monte, one of the next people I think of as a \"genius\" on D is Saban and KS is and has been learning from one of the best. Certainly agree with your last statement, we need to step up another level or two in coordinators for this league.

Btw, again my source says that KS would come to UGA if offered the job. If he wants to pursue a HC job, he needs to get out from under Saban's shadow and make a name for HIMSELF.

Let's wait and see. It might not be a fluke that Utah ripped him a new hole. I didn't watch the game but it is exactly the result I would expect if somebody ran WCO on him. I would definitely want to interview him and ask him what, if any, adjustments he would make when facing the various offenses like spread, wco, 3 option, and classic pro-set. We may also see a resurgence of power running in the future. Monte's weakness is when you blow out his DL gaps and put a fullback on his MLB.

But, you know .... if we upgraded both offense and defense then the demand for perfection isn't quite so high on DC. Simple fact is that nobody runs WCO in this conference. I think Lane will try but it's anybody's bet whether or not he'll be any good at it. You'd need a guy like Brad Johnson mentoring your QBs. So ... maybe Kirby could work out. We would need a better OC though. If we're going to adopt a defense knowing that it has a weakness then we need to adopt an offense with a complementary strength.
