Carlton Thomas is the only one I've seen so far with the \"IT\" factor. Here's the thing: these guys don't know who they are; they don't, as The Rock says, \"Know their role.\"
Caleb King is a big, bruising back who wants to play like Noel Devine or Willie Parker, cutting and juking and jiving when he really should be running people down. Richard Samuel is a slim, slick back (even if he is taller than tall) who wants to run Bill Bates over when he should be cutting around him. Carlton Thomas is the only one I've seen who can do what he ought to do and do it well. Also, I haven't seen THAT BURST OF SPEED from either Samuel (who was my personal golden child going into G-Day but was hurt) or King. I saw it all day long from Carlton.
Folks, we're also forgetting about Chapas, who showed flashes last year of being exactly the kind of fullback that Brannan Southerland was until injury derailed his senior year. Now there's a kid who can block, who can run, and as anyone who watched the Tennessee game or the bowl can attest, who has soft hands out of the backfield and knows what YAR stands for.
I think we'll be fine as long as Mike Bobo doesn't overcoach. The worst and most frustrating part of the Ware/Lumpkin/Brown years was CMR's inability to make up his mind and his micromanaging and overcoaching. In fact, those two things are his stated reason for giving up playcalling, and I think our offense is better because of it. Look at the point totals we've put up the last two years under Bobo! Anyway. I think our backfield is just fine. Also...GO DAWGS!!!
