He's giving up $500,000 a year??

Definitely something going on beneath the surface.

Couple of notes:

Come to think of it... Malzahn left Arkansas after 1 year to take the same position over at Tulsa. I don't know the
numbers, but I imagine that might have been a bit of a pay cut. He didn't get along great with HNutt, so he left
to be happier coaching with an old friend. Seems maybe
his current move is similar in nature. He's taking a pay cut, but he's moving home (and up to boot). Maybe he's
just a guy who values some things more than money..especially short term if this is a stepping stone.

I think now they are also saying the incentives and income from some other sources may drive the actual
salary up pretty significantly.

Wartdawg, trying to do a replay in my mind. Forgive me if I don't get it 100% correct.

When Nutt brought Malzahn on board, some of the reasoning I think was a certain quarterback was somehow involved with the move. The family became involved because their son was not handed the job as was thought to be the case. Best I remember Malzahn and Nutt had difficulties with each other over Nutt using another quarterback. Similar to what went on with Chizik and Malzahn. The quarterback moved on to Southern Cal I think. Did not accomplish anything there.

Malzahn's coaching career will be monitored closely from here on out. There will always be job openings in the coaching ranks, has become a dog eat dog battle, or so it seems to me.

Feel that one of the reasons Saban is so successful is that he runs that ship. Period. Results speak for themselves.

Sorry to be so vague, will do some homework and see if I can pull this together. Probably some on this board are aware of the Nutt/Malzahn issue.

My prediction is that with Auburn people, Chizik was one unhappy hire and will be one happy fire.
The NC will buy him a couple more years. That's all.

Buc.. I don't remember the exact details of Malzahn and Nutt, but as I've been trying to look
into the situation... here are two main recurring themes that keep coming up.

The first is that Malzahn absolutely despises any interference from the HC regarding his
offense. His problems with HN stemmed from that, and his supposed problems with Chizzy are
for the same reason.

Second thing I kept seeing mentioned was that the Malzahn star has been falling pretty fast.
Interest in him from major universities has been waning since last year when he was a pretty
hot commodity.

Wartdawg, did some digging and came up with this. Knew there were a couple of problems with Mustain and his family and the coaches, think this article pretty much tells the story to this point. Thanks for looking, you seem to have a good grip on "things".

Edit: Will add this and quit posting on this subject.
The Springdale Bulldogs were 14-0 in 2005 under coach Gus Malzahn. With Mustain manning Malzahn's spread offense, the Bulldogs won the Arkansas Class 5A state championship.

"Mitch was the most accurate quarterback I'd ever seen," Malzahn said.

Following 2005, Mustain and six Springdale teammates, including current Tennessee Titans wide receiver Damian Williams, went with Malzahn to Arkansas.

"If the opportunity presents itself to play with your high school coach at the next level, it's a no-brainer," Williams said. "Playing under Coach Malzahn made sense."

Malzahn joined then-coach Houston Nutt's staff as an offensive coordinator. Mustain competed with sophomore Casey Dick for the quarterback job. When Dick was injured before the start of the 2006 season, the job went to Mustain. Mustain led Arkansas to eight consecutive victories. But leading up to the ninth game of the year against South Carolina, Nutt noticed a shift in Mustain's demeanor.

"It looked like something was really wrong," Nutt said. "At South Carolina, he threw a pick in the first series. Dick went in and won a huge game."

Said Mustain: "I didn't feel any pressure. Sometimes you make mistakes."

Dick led the Razorbacks to a 26-20 win, regaining the starting job as Arkansas finished the season 10-4. After the season, Malzahn took Tulsa's offensive coordinator job and Mustain went to Nutt, seeking a change.
