Offensive strategy, anyone?

We’ve all criticized CMB plenty about the offensive play calling, and for good reason. The personnel have been there. The performance and play calling have not. I think we are almost unanimous on that point.

But that got me to wondering . . . What would I do differently? I’m bored without football, so I’m going to have some fun.

First series of the game against Boise State. Let’s assume they got the ball first and drove for a FG and lead 3-0. It’s our first possession after the ensuing kickoff, and we are now 1st and 10 at our own 26 yard line. What sort of play calling would I do?

1st and 10 – a. Play action fake to IC and make their LBs try to cover OC between the safeties? This play is predicated on pregame publicity – make Boise St. think we are trying to kick up the crowd with him in the backfield and then try to burn them with a tough-to-cover receiver, in a hoped-for mismatch.

b. Hit IC out of the backfield with a dink pass in the flat and let him put moves on a LB? Possible high payoff play, also possible INT in bad territory or just a drop.

c. Just give it to a RB – whoever starts after impressing me the most during summer/fall two-a-days – and let him grind out as many yards as possible behind our line. Let Boise know from the git-go what they will be in for, for the rest of the night?

d. Flea flicker/hook and ladder combo? Show ‘em we have a few “Boise State-like-plays” in our playbook from the very start? Potential high payoff, potential colossal disaster. But boy – what fun!

What do you think CMB calls here?

Your suggestions?

Hhhmm. This is gonna sound crazy but I would come out in three TE set. End around with Orson Charles. I would do this for a couple reasons.

1. Not a chance in hell BSU will plan too much for that formation relative to other lineups. Make them think from play one.

2. I think the 3 TE set is the perfect way to unbalance all the small defenses that have been built to combat the spread.

3. It would force the BSU to go bigger on defense, then we simply move Charles out wide to create a 3rd WR.

4. I don't think I would try the flea flicker, because that seems to be the wild play everyone assumes teams will want to start the year with

Assuming that Crowell will start. BulldogShannon like the tight end set. Would not disappoint Boise State, give the ball to Crowell and let him feel some pads prior to dipsy doodle.

thriller, my choice is c.
Linemen are fresh, just graduated from JTII's off season workouts. If the blocks are made, Crowell has a very good chance of breaking one.

Really like the thread. As far as Bobo, your guess is as good as mine.

My game strategy starts with Big John and Geathers crushing Moore and sending him wobbling off like a just born deer. After that I am OK with whatever you guys want to do.

Here is what I think Bobo would call:

1. Fullback run off right guard.
2. Fullback run off left guard.
3. Incomplete screen pass.
4. Punt.

I would run a swing pass to IC. However, thriller, Bozo will most likely run--
1st and 10--play action 80 yard incomplete pass--
2nd and 10--Carlton Thomas up the middle--2 yard loss
3rd and 12--2 back, 1 receiver set, play action 60 yard pass to lone receiver, AM runs for his life, barely avoiding a sack to gain 3--
4th and 9--Punt

The SMART era CONTINUES!!!!!!
