Grantham/JTII Old School

Realize that many on this board and many outsiders watch the recruiting of athletes, especially those that are recruited from the State of Georgia. I do, guess most of you do also. Once in a while or what seems too often, an athlete leaves our state and signs on with the “enemy”.

Spent more than a couple of hours, days and years wondering what the heck happened to our football team. Although it took a while, think I have figured it out, at least for now. Slipping seemed gradual, but looking closer, was a short span of time when looking at the whole picture.

Grantham hitched his horse to the UGA WAGON, and speaking for myself, think that he has the bit positioned exactly where it should be. Much like Sherman marching through Atlanta, he has built a fire in Athens that has not been seen for too long. . . . well a long time. If those in Athens and around the campus think that those of us out in the wilderness are not aware of what is going on, folks we watch every step. Once upon a time, we were there.

Last season Grantham brought his hand across his throat, prior to Henry kicking a field goal. Think his name was Henry, old fart like me remembers Grantham and his feelings toward winning the football game. Doing whatever it takes, makes not a damn to me what the press and others think about what he is doing. Live that moment again, we had a coach that wanted to do whatever was necessary to win a football game. Not just a football game, the UGA/UF game in JAX. That is what a successful coach does, emphasizes winning. Grantham had Adams and others on his case after that much publicized sideline shot. Adams needs to pay more attention to academia and watch closely what happened to his friends at OSU. Grantham is football, Adams is not.

That is exactly what some of our coaches would have done a SHORT TIME BACK in UGA FOOTBALL. Wonder what Adams and others would have said when Erk had blood running down his forehead prior to the games on Saturday. This is the kind of spirit that I see in Grantham. Much needed in Athens.

Grantham has done more to change UGA FOOTBALL than many of us are aware of. Next to that, I would wager that JTII and Grantham are in lock step. Both of these guys are old school warriors. Nothing wrong with that. Putting in the time to improve the TEAM. Much better Saturday afternoon leaving Athens or hanging around for a couple of days to relish what we witnessed between the HEDGES.

I think the two biggest improvements in UGA football is the hiring of Grantham, and this is not second, but the hiring of McGarity to run the program. Maybe I should say at this point that Adams did the right thing in the hiring of our AD.

Grantham is going to be a head coach, not several years from now, but soon. I leave those thoughts with you. On top I would say this . . . . What wins championships in the SEC and the NFL? My vote is DEFENSE. I have put all of my marbles in one basket, Grantham’s Basket.

Grantham is the engine that UGA needed to move from the rear to the front. Hope the offense comes along. Coach them up and they will.

Go Dawgs!!

I agree and if Adams cannot shut his pie hole I will drive up there and beat him with a football helmet.

That being said when Richt goes to feed the needy or whatever I am OK with Grantham running the team. Get a good OC and a smart secretary and go!

I TOTALLY share the feelings and excitement ya'll have over Grantham (you know there's a "but" coming) and also feel he's a motivator, old school coach and is turning our D back into the "Junkyard Dawgs......NO argument there...

BUT........I'm still not going to give him the SEC Defensive coach of the year award yet. He's only been here one year and the D was better (I could have coached a better D than WM) and expect to be better this year but school is still out on whether he is THE answer like ya'll are saying. Just a little cautious. His D gave up a ton of big plays last year and bad average on scoring D.
Just because I love his mannerisms, demeanor and fired up persona, I still want RESULTS. Show me the results, he actually hasn't done THAT much to make me sit back and not worry somewhat about our D......we'll see soon enough.

Just like CMR needs to show me......Grantham needs to as well...for me.

wlayton, always look forward to the if, ands and buts. That is what makes this "engine" work, and for the most part, good football chatter comes from this site.

I realize more than anyone that I post a lot and while I can't run any distance for time . . . . I do have one "hot" lawn tractor with a Bulldog Magnetic Sign on the cowl just to let folks know where my loyalties lie. Got my eyes on yankeedawg1, he probably has a hotter cam in his machine than I do. Messes with me, will put a set of headers on mine. Of couse my tractor is Red and Black, with a touch of Silver.

Couple of things I did not say in opening the thread, hoping there might be some questions for my feelings (and others).

Grantham seems to have the ability to get what he wants for his side of the line of scrimmage. Okie State is no longer just another team in the desert. Big money, recruiting athletes from all over the country and a coach that is full of piss and vinegar. They gave us a lesson a short time back. Back when we were supposedly playing a cover two. Glad that "Cover Two Willie" found himself a job at that other school in Oklahoma. Sure did us a big favor, although it took our head coach some prodding to make the dream come true.

Back to Grantham. Whether it was Grantham or Richt or the efforts of many, Jenkins will be lining up in Red and Black come September. I chalk that up to Grantham for this reason . . . Grantham is going to be the man that sends him to the NFL. Now whether he is all that or not, kind of goes along the lines of your very good question about we will see, just need more time to check folks out.

Another case that has me on the plus side of Grantham is he took a young fellow that we wanted coming out of high school in Columbus, Georgia, went to the left coast and made his way back to Athens. I believe that Jarvis Jones is going to be an absolute monster. Abuurn has been on a roll last couple of years and Jarvis could easily have made it to the other side of the Chattahoochee River. I know that Jones said that he was moved by Richt, don't doubt that for a minute. One thing that I do know, as do you and others, Richt does not coach defense. Never has. That is not a slap, that is the truth. Richt apparently is a strong recruiter, appears to me that Grantham has some of those same qualities.

Another position that I take in my thoughts of Grantham is looking at last season. First year under his control. He returned to college football and had to begin the teaching process from the ground level. For the most part, these were not his players on the D side of the ball. He took what he had, along with a new D backfield coach and tried to do something that looked good at times, but he knew there were changes to be made. Did not take Grantham long, took away what might have been a future star in the NFL from the defensive backfield and is in the process of making him an outstanding ILB. The best thing that Ogletree did and will always appreciate is the fact that his coach knew where he needed to play on Saturdays to put those NFL dollars in his pocket in a short time. That will happen.

ogredawg said before the position change of Ogletree that he was our bright spot in the defensive backfield. No disagreement with ogredawg on that point. ogredawg also pointed out that Jenkins is all that, I can't do anything but go along with you folks from the Valdosta/Waycross area, football is in your blood. ogredawg has had the advantage of watching Jenkins play in Mississippi, going with what he has to say.

Move on a bit further. This is said just for comparison. Isaiah Crowell is in Athens. Many have said that he is the next coming. If anyone looks at youtube film of IC, hard to disagree with that assessment. However, there is one (but) ready for this . . . . he has not played one down in the SEC, this is not high school football.

When AM signed with UGA, one of my greatest days in football. That is because I was more than aware of the young fellows talents. That proved out. I hope that Jenkins, Crowell and the rest of this young group reach the same heights that AM is shooting for.

As you said wlayton, soon we will see. Two huge games from the get-go.

Could not pass this up coming from Buck.

Could Caleb King Save The Season?

Crazy talk, uh? Then, call me crazy. Seriously, this is a likely scenario in 2011. One of the storylines that will probably play out: Caleb King saves the season.
Think about it...Boise State and South Carolina loom. Richt's reportedly on the hot seat, coming off a losing season. The 'Dogs need to play at a high level to START the season. Coaches trust in the veterans in this situation. The upperclassmen get the benefit of the doubt.
And the chances are Crowell's not ready to be the lead 'Dog. Can he contribute in a supporting role? Yes. Tote the rock 20 times against Boise State? No. Don't believe so. And when Aaron Murray throws it, will Crowell know who to block and can he block them? Can't plan on that really.
Caleb King looks to me like a young man in a good position. He's motivated to have a big senior season. It's his last shot to impress NFL scouts. He's in the best shape of his life and can play physical at 220-plus. Caleb can hold up between the tackles, burst it outside, catch it and protect. Solid all-around skill set. And again: he's motivated and capable of being the lead 'Dog.
Has he disappointed you? Sure. It hasn't been one of those legendary tales. There have been injuries and issues. Caleb has always shared the load, never really seeming to embrace the lead 'Dog role. Ealey was around then. And now, Isaiah Crowell is supposed to come in as a freshman and take all the playing time?
The track record says Caleb King is going to disappoint you. Understand that. But I'm not buying it this time.
I see a 1,000 yard season. 200 carries and 12 TD runs. A 5 yard per carry average. And as it turns out, a positive influence on Crowell.
I know, call me crazy.
