Football Player Bartering

Curious as to what some might think about a situation such as this.

I have a young football player that is graduating this year and his football skills are not just average, they are off the board. He is a skilled athlete.

Coaches and recruiters come to my home to discuss my son signing on with said school. Listen to all of the coach/recruiter speak and then have my son leave the room. Matter of fact he had said to me earlier that he was going out with some friends.

At this point, I go through some of the things that I want for my son and his future.

I say to Coach so and so, with the size and speed of todays athletes I have a great concern about my son being injured. He will be a freshman this year, and with all of his talents and what you folks are saying to me about him playing right away . . . . What happens to my son if he gets hurt or becomes damaged goods and will never again be as good as he was coming out of high school?

Coach and recruiters say, well that can happen, however it does not happen that often. If it should happen and your little Cambry Jones does go down, cannot play football again, we, the school, will pay for the operation and Cambry can continue his education. He can continue to live in the dorm and continue to eat at the players tables.

What happens after that Coach?

Well, he has a good education and can proceed with his life.

Might I suggest this coach . . . I own my business and understand finances and what it takes to make it in this society. If Cambry was to receive a token amount of money prior to signing with your school, though the money would be "contributed anonymously" to a second party . . . . .could that be arranged? That way the 200K that he would receive through the "anonymous donor" and the "anonymous recipient" would never cause you, the school or Cambry Jones a problem.

At that point wonderful coach says, no thank you. Second group comes in and say the same thing. Now, group three enters, loves Cambry Jones and makes a deal.

Group three made a deal with whomever. I am a parent, Cambry was not a witness to this deal, knows nothing about what transpired with group three and whomever.

NCAA comes forth and says we think this goes against our rules and regulations. As Cambry's father I say this, first off where I get my money is not your business. I am a businessman. Have been in business for many years. This has nothing to do with Cambry Jones, anything further, take it up with my attorneys.

This is the kind of thing that can happen in my small way of thinking. There are going to be many Cambrys and each year they will get bigger and better.

Do we take the education, even though Cambry can't realistically pass the exams, but he can play football. At this point, I wonder if basket weaving would work for my son and his future. Of course it is about his future, right, not mine. Please pass the biscuits . . . Folks this is the first step, there will be many more just like this around the corner. Football will never be the same if this happens one time. As if this is the first time.

Reggie Bush gave his awards back. He however did not return the money. USC is paying the price for the same situation that I tried to describe above.

FBI involved, so much media hype, lots of folks watched the game. Now we will see just how strong the NCAA is.

Sorry that it had to come to this, but it is here, and we will see it again. . . .soon.

Buc, it is a very realistic scenario. I have done a lot to thinking about what could possibly happen to AU and Cam.

Personally, I do not think anything is going to happen in the long run because I am sure that there will be no trails, if Cecil and his donor were somewhat smart about it. Straight Cash and not to be deposited. Now, if Cecil took money from a representative at AU, knowingly or unknowingly, he should and will be suspended. AJ was suspended because he unknowingly sold a jersey to a so called agent.

I keep hearing the argument from different media outlets that Cecil admitted to asking for cash, but Cam had no knowledge of his request. Well, from what I have read, if he took cash and it is proven, it doesn't matter if Cam knew anything or not. If a person representing an athlete receives an unfair benefit, than that athlete should be ruled ineligible. I believe the rule reads something like that.

Buc, again, you are right on with the situtation. I am sure that it happens way to often. I guess all we can hope is that we are never involved in a situation like that because eventually, that school is going to get caught. The free education should be enough when you look at what it cost to enroll as a full-time student at a major university. Not to mention all the meals, clothing, and other benefits the players are rewarded. It is sad that people take advantage of the system, but it happens everyday I am sure.

I am tired of hearing about it truly. I am more disappointed that an official could watch a player punch a kid, but treat it differently because he had the ball in his hands. Never seen a player use a stiff arm with a closed fist. Not to mention what Fairley did. I am probably going to stay aggrevated about this until we play them next year.

Good Post Buc. Does make you wonder what path we are heading down, and how long hav we been walking down that path blindly.

I believe the RB/USC scenario set the foundation for what will likely occur to Cam, Cecil and the Wareagletigerplainsmen. Only much quicker! This is just another chapter in that novel that has chapters on Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Bama, and AU! Doesn't matter how many rose petals you spread across the steaming pile, just makes it smell like flowery adult male bovine excrement! Can't happen quick enough in my opinion!

From what I have heard from reputable Bama sources, there are tape recordings.
Also, Kiffen had offered Newton $140,000 before he went to USC.
This story is not going away and I will never look at Auburn the same way.
Tigers can spin it any way they want. Does not change the truth.
Cam Newton will play professional ball and make millions.
Auburn football will suffer for years.
And Yes, Fairley is a thug.
GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. The story behind the story, PAT DYE!

Nice one, Buc.
I heard today that there may be some breaking news on this story this week but I don't know how good the tip is.
There are a lot of rocks to be looked under. Here's one.

AD5, one of the problems that I have with the AJ situation is that he made a public statement that did not register for me. AJ said publicly that as soon as he had done the deal, he knew that he had made a mistake. Will leave that alone. However, this is what bothers me, these young fellows think that they are "street smart". The "Pimps" as Saban called them are . . . "street smart".

averagedawg, I watched the replay of the UGA/AU game this afternoon on CBS cable. Paid particular attention to Tracey Rocker. TR played very similar to the way Fairley plays, when he was in college. Had more than one penalty called on him for sure. They are not doing anything about this kind of play in practice. If so, this would not be so blatant. Notice two back ups were kicked out of the game for throwing punches. Dumb asses, fist meet helmet, helmet wins. Rocker is teaching that way. The scum, should not say that, the bad butts coming out of high school will go for that kind of coaching.

Also, went to the South Carolina site today . . . . they were all over the illegal hits that Fairley laid on UGA. Not like UGA and SC are the best of friends, just made me feel a bit better that another school called it like it is. Know that bringing attention to Fairley will probably help their cause in Atlanta, maybe forcing these SEC officials to make proper calls. I am aware of Pat Dye, for sure averagedawg.

NC_Dawg, Cam is on the same path that Vick was on. This kid will get in more trouble than the law should allow. He is leaving a trail, won't matter, he will get the money and then his "wheels" will come off. Enjoy Auburn, this could be a bitter pill to swallow if the dominos fall the wrong way.

Slive stinks. Why should we wonder about the comments from around the nation being hurled at the SEC? I have the answer . . . . SLIVE. Gold star for me.
