As mentioned earlier you must change and adapt. Football has changed the last 5 years and for sure the last 10.

For that matter almost every thing in this world has changed.

Here is my theory on why we can't defend the spread and those type of offenses effectively.

We can't practice against it. NOW WAIT BEFORE YOU CRUCIFY ME.

You can game plan all you want but if can't practice against it you are at a disadvantage.

Here is some thoughts to my theory.

When offenses really started passing a lot during the late 70's and early 80's even Erk's defenses had problems defending good passing teams. Here is why UGA, never had any good passing QB's. Buck Belue, John Lastinger, Wayne Johnson etc were never strong passers. If you never face a good passer in practice how are you going to practice what you need to do to stop them?

The reason the wing T and the option offense went away were every team was running it and practicing against it, therefore they learned how to stop it. The few schools that have gone back to it today excel offensivley because no other team has the players that can execute it in practice. If you look at those teams that have a "different style" of offense have a hard time fielding a defense that can stop another type of offense- except pro set offenses.

Why is that you ask?... pro style offense is basic and any college QB can adequately run it in practice well enough for the defense to be familiar with what is happening/coming.

Yes Murray is a spread QB but does our defense ever face him in the spread . No, because our hard headed coaches want to mold him in to something else.

I can go on and on but you get my point.

Of course none of this can make up for piss poor effort, arm tackling, lack of discipline and predictable play calling.

Bottom line yes we need better players to fit TG's defense but we still need our offense to join the 21 century. Otherwise they can save risk of injury and practice against the local pop warner team. Their offense is about as complex as ours.

Some are wise and some are otherwise !

Bama's D can stop it and doesn't practice against it. Just because our D doesn't practice against the spread, doesn't mean we shouldn't be able to stop it.
