Say what you will about Oklahoma, Ohio State or anyone else, but USC is to me the ultimate reality check. They are the ultimate team at present and over the last few years. Not so with their conference; the SEC is the best from top to bottom, but USC has the best team and program over time (say the last five or six years).
I disagree with you, DawgSpeare. We will never know whether or not USC is the ultimate team because their level of competition makes them look so good. Remember when Oklahoma was one of those \"elite\" teams in the country (oh, wait, they still are...)? They were undefeated in 2004 and looked like world-beaters, playing a \"more rugged and physical\" style of football than anyone else. Then it was proven that USC could manhandle them, because Oklahoma got style points for crushing Baylor and Colorado and Texas A&M and Iowa State. We'll never know whether or not the 2003 LSU team could have taken the 2003 USC team, or whether Tuberville's undefeated Auburn squad could have taken out Carroll's Trojans in 2004. But the fact is that USC never had to face those teams, two of the most dominant teams I can remember. If USC were in the Sun Belt, they wouldn't have lost for the last decade, but would they deserve a shot at a national title, given their level of competition? I don't think you can give credence to \"conference wins\" when your conference SUCKS.
