kentdaddy, my wife drug me to a lecture at Bolles Wed night to hear the world renown Dr. Amen (no joke) on the brain and it's functions etc. He flatly stated that kids act like kids, make bad decisions, choices, act immature, etc etc etc because the frontal lobe of a human's brain (which controls a person's thinking, rationalization etc all of the areas above) does NOT fully developed until age 25. He said this accounts medically why kids act and think like kids until their brains are fully developed at age 25. I'm NOT kidding you, this world renowned Dr. said all this (probably much better and made much more sense than I'm making), I'm not making this up as wild as it sounds. He has clinics in Ca. and Va. and people from all over the world come to see him. Check him out on the web. Very interesting but meeting way to long (wanted to get home).

I understand that. I am a science buff and love to read science mags and journals. I do agree with that information, but legally at 18 we are all adults. Besides, kids and teenagers are more resilient than many people give them credit for. 18 year olds are not all a bunch of fragile little lambs that crumble if someone says a cross word to them. I quarantee at some point these athletes have had a coach yell at them demanding greater effort. Only someone who has never played any competitive sports would think that all young athletes are going to shrink and cower if corrected in front of fans or family.

I think it is all relative. If you are 77 and all you hang out with is 70 year olds then you think someone who is 30 is still a kid. If you are 18 you think someone who is 30 is an old geezer. I am 37 but I play basketball with guys from 18 to 50 in various leagues or gyms. My wife is a little younger than me also so I see it from a different perspective. I have one daughter and another on the way so my views are changing. I am not too old yet to not remember my single days and college girls. It was not that long ago. Even though the brains may not be completely formed college aged people are legal adults that are asked to defend this country among many other very serious things. I just do not buy into the fallacy that they are all fragile flowers.

I agree with you wlayton. I was just addressing the previous poster who sounds detached from anyone under 30. Players who play at this level are obviously very competitive and have had demanding coaches for years. If a coach yells at them or demands better they are not going to cry about their hurt feelings.

We are on the same page.

I just cannot stand the whole warm and fuzzy, everyone is special so we give them all A's in school or trophies so we don't hurt their feelings kinda thing. It is counterproductive and produces mediocrity in life. Am I making any sense here?

wlayton,

I dug up some info on this Dr. Amen and it looks like his research is by no means rock solid.

quackfiles.blogspot.com/2005/05/dr-daniel-amen-and-spect.html

www.quackwatch.org/06ResearchProjects/amen.html

It looks like his methods and research are not actually unassailable facts. His methods have not withstood critical analysis yet either. His marketing looks very good though. I smell cold fusion or scientology.

The point I was making previously is our players and other football players in college are not middle school kids who run home to mommy. They are used to having demands placed upon them. I was not trying to start an argument.

Peace

I'm pretty much with you kentdaddy on the subject. I just found this brain subject very interesting as well. I found it interesting that people under 25, their brains aren't fully developed which results in many forms of childish, irrational behavior. If he's a quack, he's at least very interesting, is selling a lot of books and making big bucks. Shoot, I didn't even want to go to the lecture.
