Buc,
Spot on pal. Spot on. I have seen that Bear Bryant video and I concur with exactly your reference to it. To your point about our camp video...
When I heard the previous coach saying that Kublanow had to go on the internet to learn how to properly snap the ball in the gun as a leftie, I thought to myself: you mean to tell me that you can't coach a player who is a left-handed center to get the ball to the quarterback in the shotgun? Are you ____ing kidding me? Get off that field, drop your shirt in the dirty clothes bin, return your apparel to the athletic department, clean out your office, turn in your security card and parking pass. Now. Absolutely disgusting.
I want to touch on what you mentioned that producing good young men and championship football teams are not mutually exclusive. That is so well said, and frankly, the previous regime was completely lost on that point. I was not at all surprised when I heard the previous coach say what wartdawg referred to in the 'rings collect dust' comment. To me, that was just the fait accompli of the previous coach's philosophy. I was glad to see the mask come off. I'm just so relieved he said that on his way out because if he had said that as a head coach, I think I would have come unglued and written Jere Morehead myself. That statement vindicated McGarity, so I'm sure he was glad to hear it as well.
When you look at any successful coach at any level, particularly those who establish a trend of success, they all have a common thread. They know what winning takes, they demand excellence at all times, and they absolutely refuse to accept mediocrity. They inspire those around them to do what they are teaching. Speaking of Bear Bryant, I love the quote from him about winning: "I know what it takes to win. If I can sell them on what it takes to win, then we're not going to lose too many football games."
Wartdawg,
Doesn't bother me at all. You are stating the facts of the matter. I'm not interested in emotion. Facts are what they are. We were soft from the top down. This aw shucks we lost attitude permeated every aspect of the program. This "well you gotta hand it to Vanderbilt, they played a great game," nonsense that was constantly heard after a loss to a team we had no business losing to was enough to make one want to tear his hair out.
