NC Dawg I didn't know you where so young. A Soph in 84, my God I was a soph in 51 undergrad school. By the way who is Bob Segar? Showing my age again. He must have been some kind of singer or played a hot guitar. I agree sports are wagging the tail of academia at UGA & has been for a long time. Started with
Dooley,s remedial programs in the 60,s & 70,s. If a student athlete could not make the grade in the regular class-room, then he should not be a student at UGA. The best coach in my poor estimation was Wally Butts. He recruited the whole eastern USA. Most of the players came from Penn, Ohio, NY, Mass, Ill & 0f course Ga. MY best friend as an offensive tackle named Richard Yelvington. He later played for the NY Giants. Wally had a pipe line to Youngstown, Ohio, getting players of the likes of Sinkwich, Poschner, Morocco, DeCarlo & Babcock out of Pearl River, NY, Principe out of Penn & the list goes on. Teams that played us used to say "It's us against the world." Dooley's players used to call Tuesday practice "Bloody Tuesday" Every days practice under Butts was a bloody battle. Tough on the field, but he loved his players & took care of then off the field. What we used to call a man's man. God I miss football the way it was supposed to be played.
All I can say is GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DawgDoc, believe the term used when Dooley moved things around was . . . . Basket Weaving. Some used that term anyway.
My high school football coach played for Butts, Al Jeffrey. His last season was the 1946 Year that we were very good. Coach Jeffrey was from Conneticut.

Sure don't feel young, but thanks! The early 80's was an awesome time to be on campus. It was not uncommon to be riding on the Milledge Avenue bus and have Herschel get on for a ride because in was in town for a game! You're about the age of my sister, the eldest of the brood! The entire clan were raised on hallowed Sanford turf. Many, many fall Saturday's were spent trekking from East Atl. to Athens. Great times, great memories, great teams!
Like you, I miss the spirit of a team playing for the University and treating same with respect!....Now, it's all about ME and MONEY!...Sad.....
GO DAWGS!!!

:)Buc I believe the last season your old high school played at UGA was 1945. I follow Wally's boys pretty closely. I loved the man.

Senior Poster DawgDoc, you are right again. Coach had more to do with my life after high school than any one individual in my life. Have forgotten many names, not my football coach.
Good to see you back . . . . even "old farts" still have "life".

DawgDoc, seems more and more these days I don't always do well in the recall department. Thought about the above last evening and thought I would post the following.
Albert (Al) Jeffrey was a WWII Marine and a Georgia football player that help shape my life. He had an incredible influence on me that has stayed with me through my adult life.
