I know that I have been on a tear about mark richt and football at the University of Georgia. Also get emails about me letting up, go a bit easier. Understandable that many feel that way, just human nature for some to relax a bit more than I do about the current leadership in Athens.

Most of what I post comes from my heart. I would not have a problem sitting down and chatting with mark richt. Would love to do that.

My major problem with richt is this . . . . Makes mistakes in many of his coaching decisions, I think. Both on and off of the field. Head coach was quick to say that the responsibility of the Auburn pass play not being batted down was his fault. While he was being cavalier, that was not the truth. Defensive coordinator and his group were responsible for what happened. Head coach did not mess around with grantham’s defense, said that more than one time in his coach speak videos.

We hear things like grantham not rotating his defensive linemen. Garner not keeping scheduled meetings with those he was recruiting. Defensive backs coached by someone that also had a hard time with the grantham way of doing things.

Special teams not getting the job done, which to me means they were not being coached up. None of us at this point really know how many folks were involved with coaching Special Teams. Why did Special Teams have to be put under pressure from not being coached up. Two years ago richt said that he was going to step in and help with the Special Team coaching. Really. If that was the case, richt absolutely failed there also.

Punting, what a mess that turned out to be.

First year in Athens our field goal kicker floundered. Why could he not kick the ball out of the end zone, he sure did that in high school. Will never convince me that richt had anything to do with our kicker getting better in his second year. Head coach did say before the 2013 season that he was going to “study up” on field goal kicking. He said that, did not pull that out of thin air.

Walsh leaves UGA and becomes one of the most accurate field goal kickers in the NFL.

Said that I would bring points of contention to this thread, have not come close to the many things that richt as the head coach did nothing about.

Guarantee this . . . . Head coach will have his face in all of the media photographs if the defense steps up. More than enough running backs and quarterbacks. As richt says, have to have depth in those two positions.

Too many want to “believe” that things will turn around overnight. We have always had player talent in Athens, although in recent years we seem to lose more top players to other programs. These young men visit other universities and get a good look at where “real college football coaches reside”.

Do I think we are getting the most bang for our buck . . . . Nope. Starts at the top and then flows down river.

Jon Richt coming to Athens. Sure as hell does not excite me. Might end up being one of the best coaches ever, if that is the case, he will have passed his Dad. Our head coach is a second stringer at best. Second stringer making over 3 million dollars every year. As ogredawg said in this thread, Dad can shovel a few coins in the direction of Jon.

Know that Bobby and Ann are watching richt carry out the old FSU way of doing things. Maybe we get lucky and we get the end result of what happened in Tallahassee. I said that.

Chauncey Rivers said on another board that the Defensive Coordinator and the overall UGA defensive scheme was what caused him to flip. Pruitt is working, not trying to be the "show dog". See how this plays out in two or three years.

There has been a load of conversation on this board and others about Mike Bobo.

Ever stop to take a look at the players in Athens the past several years that Mike Bobo is responsible for? Did not say mark richt, said Mike Bobo. We hear and I have said same, play calling at times has been suspect.

How much of that is on Mike's shoulders? Are we being honest when we think that Mike calls all of the offensive plays? If mark richt does not shoulder some of that responsibility, that to me is another short coming. richt is the head coach and he can have it his way. richt did not come to UGA as a defensive genius. Mike was a starter in college, richt was not.

As a player in college and the NFL one would think that a quarterback now a head coach would understand the offensive line and the importance of same. However, if most of your playing time came in high school, that might be the answer as to why the offensive line has been overlooked. SEC football requires an offensive line. Have yet to see richt step up to the plate and work hard recruiting those that "serve and protect".

Folks, you are not going to hear the media do anything but point out the "highlights" that reserve their seats in Athens. When richt was on the hot seat, the media had a little to say, but most of the time talked in the third person.

There has to be some out here that don't have "seats in Athens" that are probably further along in knowledge about football than they (media) are. Their jobs depend on putting a face on what the coach does.

Jon Richt in Athens . . . . excites the hell out of me. Just what our football program needed. Thanks Goofy.

Imo, I think this "Jon" thing is a non-event. Not going to lose any sleep over it.

If CMR pays him out of his own pocket, fine.....he did that for a couple of coaches early in his HCing career when those (two coaches if I remember correctly) coaches either didn't get a raise or not enough of a raise in CMR's mind. I at least commend him for that move giving them money out of his pocket.

I'm taking a wait and see approach and not get all worked up about it......yet.

I will give him an atta boy for figuring out he was not a major college qb and going somewhere he could play. Had to be humbling to go to mars hill. Im familiar with that place and it is a podunk little town. They offered my daughter a swim scholarship and I was releived she was not interested after visiting. :cheer:

Fathers will always take care of their kids. Just the way it is. Ill see it tomorrow at 7am.

Thinking about this a little more I would retract that "atta boy" if his Dad was a working stiff like me. Like it or not a Clemson degree will give more opportunity in this world than a Mars Hill degree will. On a strickly football decision it was a good call.

He knew the degree didn't matter because he had an open door at UGA.
My biggest problem with this is, what if he isn't very good (which is likely, looking at pop)? Is papa richt ever going to get rid of him? I kinda doubt it.

The SMART era CONTINUES!!!!!!
