...Grantham’s first three defenses improved as they got older. In other words they were like wine… better with age. In 2010, the defense allowed 22.1 ppg (a 4-point improvement from the year before) with 69% of the starters as junior or seniors. In 2011, the defense allowed 20.6 ppg with 76% of the starters as junior or seniors. Last year the defense allowed 19.6 ppg (the first time since 2006 that the defense was under a 20-ppg average) with 85% of the starters as junior or seniors.
Why are so many freshmen and sophomores starting on Georgia’s defense? You may or may not remember Nick Marshall. He’s the starting quarterback at Auburn right now. What does Marshall have to do with Georgia’s problems on defense?
He should be a staring cornerback at Georgia right now – not the starting quarterback at Auburn. But things happen and players get kicked off of teams. Three secondary members from the class of 2011 (Grantham’s first full recruiting class) were kicked out of school by Mark Richt after signing day 2012 – not great timing in terms of signing players to replace them in the 2012 class, but no one noticed because the 2012 secondary was stacked. It ended the year #2 in the SEC in pass defense… pretty good.

because teams ran all over us...
yes the run defense is good this year...
as teams pass all over us..
Yes.. our secondary is young.. our D is young.. got it. It's called planning. For whatever reason you want to
come up with, the transition between the loaded 2012 defense that lost 7 players to the NFL to this years squad wasn't planned out well. We can list the reasons why, but it's still something that should never happen.
"Yes and no. The first three years of Grantham’s time at Georgia saw consistent improvement in ppg averages.
It also saw the Bulldogs within yards of an SEC championship"
Yes.. a championship we would have won had our unbelievably loaded D been able to just hold 'Bama to lets
say.. only 250 instead of 350 yards rushing.
"Got better like fine wine"... yes while we played some of the weakest schedules we've ever played.
This program is great on making excuses... I remember the excuses last year, and the year before, and the year before, and the year before. I'm sure we are lining up the excuses for next year as well. We've done a great job of making excuses for about 7 years now.
We make excuses every season while the rest of the top half of the SEC wins National Championships.

So his scheme having players that had three years to learn it improved to 19.6 ppg that would rank 20th right now in scoring defense. Vast improvement on what we have but not real stellar considering the talent that was on last years team. No matter how great your battle plan is if the soldiers that are implementing it don't understand or trust it you are destined to lose the fight.
