yankeedawg1, being totally honest.
When I look at the way our defense played last year, warts and all, still takes me back to talent in Athens.
I watch our defense line up and it seems too often 51 Ramik Wilson is trying to get a player or players in position before the snap. In my opinion, this has been going on much too long. Many players on our team have been here long enough to play a base 3 man front. Too often I have watched Grantham moving along the sideline waving and shouting to the top of his lungs.
Takes me to this. I watch coaches on the sidelines almost as much as the play on the field. On occasion I see opposing coaches step on the field to change a defensive formation, but that does not happen near as much as it does with Todd Grantham. In my simple football mind, that is a problem that occurs much too often.
Grantham continues to do some of the same things he has been doing for three years. At some point one would think that something is wrong somewhere. Guess I am one that thought players would come around to Grantham's way of playing defense. When I see Tennessee put 31 points on the board, after being behind 17-3 at one point, I begin to wonder.
In the Tennessee game the yardage and plays that our defense gave up were not against a team like Clemson or South Carolina, this was Tennessee. North Texas, still cannot get a grip on that.
Curious if anyone noticed on the sideline close to the end of the game, Grantham approached AM, could not make up what he was saying, AM however was shaking his head in appreciation.
Lakatos, I cannot in truth speak to just how effective or ineffective his coaching methods are. I do know this, when we are giving up the amount of yardage and points that we are start to wonder if Willie left.
Said a short time back that next year I, speaking for myself, will be in Grantham's grill if this continues. Again, not a shortage of talent, seems our recent problems are in the coaches basket. Grantham has player talent, however slowly but surely he is not proving that he has a handle on college football.
This is easy for me to say . . . . hire someone with Special Team coaching talent. Understand that the coaches don't punt or kick the football, but they are just as responsible for that part of the game as any other part. If you cannot punt effectively in the SEC, you are constantly trying to climb a mountain. sadlerdawg has been on point with this (ST play) and many other points over a long period of time.
I haven't bailed out, but I have my hand on the rip cord. Quite frankly, looking at our personnel, would love to see us go back to a four man front as the base defense. I have more to say.
Edit: Just finished my post and had not read DAWGtm's post. Spot on.
