Use The Word "Skilled" Carefully

Sorry, went back to other links and it really bothered me.

Head Coach Mark Richt needs to come back and speak to those of us that don't agree with his offensive line statements.

One of my shorter posts, and this post is about Head Coach Mark Richt to tell me, you, everyone again that follows Georgia football that we don't need a dominant offensive line. I call that BS.

If Head Coach Mark Richt lives by that statement, my view of his change of coaching methods is over.

Mark Richt, say that face to face when looking into Brandon Kublanow's eyes.

“I’ve coached offensive football a long time," Richt said last week. "I don’t want to make anybody mad at Florida State, but we didn’t have dominating offensive lines, but we had some great skill people that were able to make some great plays. If you have a bunch of linemen that know what to do, and can stay coordinated and get their hat on the right guy, and fight like mad, you can neutralize a defender for long enough for a great skill guy to get on by, or get the ball off, whatever it might be.

MAYBE IN THE ACC BUT NOT IN THE SEC

So what’s the talent base on this Georgia offensive line, Richt was asked?

“These guys, they’re very good players, but I just don’t know – before it’s over one or two might be a high (draft) pick," he said. "But I think they’re the kind of guys that can get the job done. They’ve done a nice job. Coach Friend has done a nice job.”

WELL AT LEAST HE DID NOT THROW COACH FRIEND UNDER THE BUS LIKE HE DID THE PLAYERS. BUT HE "JUST DOESN'T KNOW" 13 YEARS IN THE SEC AND HE COMPARES US TO FLORIDA STATE AND STILL DOESN'T KNOW WHAT AN O LINE IS.

“Again, I still don’t say we have this massive, dominating front, but we’ve got a lot of guys that can function and play well. So there is some true competition there.”

MASSIVE AND DOMINATING ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE MASSIVE TO BE DOMINATING. CASE IN POINT BOISE STATE AGAINST UGA 2 YEARS PAST.

I used the caps for my responses to CMR quotes because I don't have the options to quote or bold up anymore for some reason. Granted CMR was being honest because that is the way he is and I respect that. But he has no idea what it takes to bring this team to the highest level.

ogredawg, amazes me that Mark Richt can make those statements and not take a serious look at the consequences.

Some will say he is just being honest. OK, I can accept honesty above all else.

What his comments say to me is that he is not a college football coach on the level of Nick Saban and others. Guess that is why he makes a paltry 3 million as compared to Saban's income.

Is it any wonder that top flight offensive linemen make their way to Tuscaloosa? Saban welcomes offensive linemen, one of his first priorities. Check the latest NFL draft. Where did Alabama's top players get chosen and what position did they play? "Skill" players (running back) as some like to tag them did not go in the first round, same cannot be said for the lack of a better term . . . . "unskilled" players from the offensive line.

Continue this practice in Athens and this attitude, as 36869 has often said ogredawg, we will be the bridesmaid at best. All we have to do is check players on campus and it becomes increasingly evident that there are still missing links that prohibit us from hoisting the Crystal.

This post is not meant to be ugly, it is meant as the truth, the way I see it. Just my opinion.

Edit: The link below proved to be very interesting to me, like most of Bernie's work. What stands out to me? Where were the offensive linemen that went other places in all of the years mentioned in the thread. Not like we have had the fronts that Saban and others have had.

We may as well stop comparing CMR to Saban (I do it as much as anybody). There is only one Saban in CF and the other 100+ coaches in CF can't compare to him either.....probably safe to say they won't ever be as good either.

BUT.....it doesn't mean you can't win a NC.

Do we think Les Miles is a Saban?....Chizik?....Meyer?.....how about good ol' Mac Brown?

Every sporting generation has it's own superstar that others can't live up to.....Nicklaus, Federer/Laver, Jordan, Ali etc etc etc.....Saban is right up there now in CF history.

CMR and the other 100+ will never be a Saban but history shows that even if you aren't quite as talented, you can still win a NC....or Super Bowl, or a US Open, or a NBA title etc.

Totally agree with the analysis about our OL (I've been very vocal as well about it in the past) but also am not giving up on CMR just yet.....heck, why doesn't everyone just quit and give the NC trophy to Saban every year?

All superstars can be beat on a given day.....CMR only needs one chance.....hopefully soon and if it happens, the flood gates will open in Athens, Ga.

Not just Saban that I talk about wlayton. Spurrier has had CMR's number since day one in this league. Him handing us our asses 3 years in a row with the chickens proves it.

Now you have the upcoming guys and Sumlin is at the top of the list. Franklin if he had more to work with at Vandy would be right up there also. Muschamp is another one who is doing good things with the gaytors. The coaching in this league is not just Saban but he is the man right now because the Crystals reside in Tuscaloosa. Arkansas and Kentucky have new guys also. Freeze and Mullen no slouches. It is getting tougher and tougher all around, and when we make the move to 16 or 18 it will not get any easier.

So IMHO the future is NOW and I hope like you and many others that CMR can lead us to the land of Crystal, but I have my doubts and even more serious doubts after the statements he has made.

wlayton, very good post. Very good.

With that will also add a couple of lines from your post . . . .

BUT.....it doesn't mean you can't win a NC.

Do we think Les Miles is a Saban?....Chizik?....Meyer?.....how about good ol' Mac Brown?

Think those two lines get very close to the heart of what is or isn't happening in Athens.

All of us know that the above mentioned coaches have had a lot of talent, basically every year, wherever they were running the program. What is preventing Mark Richt's name from being pasted alongside everyone but Saban?

I am not bailing on Richt either, know that he is going to be the coach for several years. Just crawls up my you know what for him to openly make a statement(s) such as the one he made in describing offensive linemen.

One thing is known for sure . . . . these young men follow many boards prior to signing the LOI, know that for a fact, and all of them are not as described by Mark Richt as "skilled". Simply a bad choice of words from Mark Richt, in my opinion. However, if he means and believes what he said, then that answers my question about his "skill" set.

Don't like to be angry. Mark Richt made some DUMB statements to a listening audience. Bad thing about his remarks, they cannot be referred to as "taken out of context". Not angry, just a bit confused that our Head Coach would say something like that and did not have the foresight to think it was just that DUMB.

Go Dawgs . . . . Coach'em Up!
