Use The Word "Skilled" Carefully

11 years 6 months ago - 11 years 6 months ago #52310 by Buc
This is where Mark Richt and I have a disagreement.

When I use the word "skill", I move away from football "speak" the way it was referred to "back in the day". Anyone that comes close to thinking that "skill" does not apply to offensive linemen, well, we are on a different page.

Take for example the offensive center . . . . that in my mind is a "skilled" player, or should be if good enough to change blocking assignments or setup blocking assignments.

Not trying to beat Mark Richt up, wish he would think about his choice of words. In the article below he does try to "smooth" some over some of his comments.

Wonder how much "skill" the top two 2013 NFL draft choices have? Lots of powerful football players on both sides of the ball, wonder what made these two stand out? Maybe a bit of "skill".

Is skill being able to take the football and run for a touchdown, many cases yes. What about the blocks that were thrown to allow that touchdown run? Why is the back "skilled" and the offensive lineman or linemen are not?

Just the way this old fart feels about certain terms.

Buc I was going to start a thread about this article when I saw your post. Great minds think alike they say

CMR says this after Alabama handed our asses to us to the tune of 350 yards on the ground behind a line that "dominated" our front seven. Can't teach an old dawg new tricks Buc my friend, when CMR sez he will let the "skill" players do the job.

Has CMR "changed"? I think not. He flat out states that he can win without a "dominate" O line. Been there done that the last few years.

If that attitude persist then Saban, Miles, the Old Ball Sack and probably now Sumlin will continue to hand us our collective asses, and the Crystal will never rest in Athens.

Maybe I should apologize for the above comments. Not trying to tick anyone off.

All I am looking for is improvement across the board. That includes coaches and players. If I had to say which area has been lacking over the past ten or so years, I would quickly say coaching. That definitely includes Mark Richt.

I sincerely believe that most of the changes that have been made on the coaching side recently have been solid. Poiints for Mark Richt.

Have mentioned a time or two that I really like some of the changes that I have seen recently on the coaching level. Most important change that I have seen recently was Mark Richt letting Garner move on. Short time back, Mark Richt would have found a way to keep Garner on campus. I believe that Garner saw the handwriting on the wall. Richt was not going to try to keep him on the coaching staff, believe he had a belly full of the goings on in Athens, another Richt change. Richt had coaches come on board that did not do things the same way RG did and we see the reason that Garner is back "home".

If Garner has good players, he will get "some results". We can bet he will be on his knees praying for a victory when we play Auburn for the second year in a row on their turf.

I also believe if the current coaching staff continues on the path they are on, Garner will prove to be a short memory. Why would I say that? Because RG in my opinion forgot what it was that he was supposed to do . . . . be loyal to the PAYCHECK. Sound harsh? RG left UGA to return to AU. Why did he not do this some time back? Looking at some of the statements made by young recruits concerning RG, really makes me align myself with the players.

Pulling for Chris Wilson has been an easy task for me. There is no way that Wilson would cast his lot with Georgia if he could not move his place in college football forward. Chris Wilson, Todd Grantham and coaches like them don't set their sites on their current titles. My opinion.

Mark Richt understands with the upcoming four and you are out playoff system, he has to be there. He needs talent and a solid coaching staff. Does that sound a bit like what Nick Saban has? Just asking. :)

ogredawg, it heartens me when "old school" recognizes "things".

Several things bother me a great deal, most of them you mentioned above. TAM has a quarterback that has no fear. They also have a coach that has a chance to get close to Saban. Sumlin will not have a problem finding another quarterback that will move TAM's program forward. Not a doubt in my mind.

Miles, some think, dumb as a rock, might be. All I have to do is look at his time at LSU, dumb as a rock, ok, who the hell wants to play them, year after year.

I have footage of Mark Richt from a long time back. The statements that he made remind me then remind me of some comments he just made.

I have been pulling hard for Mark Richt to take a close look, still feel he has to a point. Don't think the final verdict is in. This I know . . . . the coaches in the SEC, the players that want to be a part of the SEC are going to make it tougher for every school in the conference to be in the final four.

Do not need to hear that we only need a "mediocre offensive line". This has been the single biggest problem that we have had.

Sony Michel is "all that". If he comes into the SEC with a less than average or average offensive line, that falls on the coaching staff. I will stop for now, but you pushed my button. High fives to you ogredawg. Mean that.

Edit: Sumlin comes into the SEC, biggest thing he can do that other SEC teams cannot . . . . he will pull talent from Texas, and that ain't something to chuckle about. Will also invade Atlanta and the State of Florida. Scary.

Sumlin will raid the talent of Louisana also Buc.

Miles may not be the smartest coach in the SEC but he can recruit the talent and knows as does Saban that it takes a big and talented O line to win in the SEC. He was won in this league and has the Crystal to prove it.

The comments CMR made just do not sit well with me. Like you said sounds like the Richt of old.

Buc you have my respect as always, yes I agree that the coaching changes CMR has made are for the better. But is that all CMR or is Mac having some say so. I think the latter is true. But until the attitude changes at the "top" or a physical change is made the Crystal will not be within reach.

ogredawg, since I have been on this board, you have not wavered, wavered on your opinion.

There comes a time when (I) have to go through the motions of . . . . supporting our football team . . . . supporting our coaches. That does not mean that I have "ever" flucuated from my heart felt thoughts about my university.

It breaks my heart, (mean that) when I see the same mistakes made, not only under Mark Richt, go back further than that. I believe that Mark Richt is peddling fast, trying to catch up. Anyone that doubts that statement should go back and witness what MR did with his original hires. Speaks well for him as a head coach and committed person. Does not do much when you make his salary and look at ranked teams and wins. If I ever get arguments or "different opinions" elsewhere, they are easily shut down with FACTS. That is all you are doing ogredawg, and your facts are in order.

I have had some verbage thrown at me on other boards when I speak about VD. Have had a small amount of that here, not much, because there are one or two that truly believe that VD was all that. I try hard to leave that subject alone. It is easy, especially when I know what I saw, and could not be hidden. That is no reflection on those that think VD was special. I know that they don't know.
