New Commits and Building or Rebuilding

Don't know of any new commits as yet. Figure we might get some news on Sunday. Not a lot of slots left, thinking there are two or three spaces that will be left open for "our hopefuls". For sure there will be some last minute young men that declare "somewhere".

At this point, looks like 2013 could be a very good recruiting year, not so much the number of players, but the quality of the young folks that will light up Sanford Stadium.

Buck Belue mentions that we are losing a lot of defensive players that will be hard to replace. Sure can't argue that point. When I look over the list of those departing, makes my knees knock. Offensively I feel we are ahead of where we have been in years.

One of my concerns is about replacing the players that are leaving, are the new and second year guys going to be able to step up and get familiar with the defensive schemes that Grantham runs in the 3/4. Took the guys that are departing a couple of years to get to the point that they could play "fast football". Starting the 2013 Season off with some good football teams, so yes, that is a concern of mine.

This is a point in Georgia Football where we find out just how good or bad our recruiting and coaching is and has been for a couple of years. Alabama and LSU over the years have been able to reload rather than rebuild, Alabama did that again this 2012 Season and we see that they are in Miami to play for the Crystal.

Not really looking for miracles, do want to be able to say on this board that we are gaining on some of the others in the SEC, two or three in particular.

Between now and February the main topic on this board will be about recruiting, actually one of my favortie times of the football season. After the bowl game in Orlando, there will be those that won't be back on the board posting if the past years hold true. Not just this board, all boards that are "football crazy".

Wondering if you folks are thinking about the incoming players and next years returnees. Thoughts on what our team will look like in 2013.

Yes Buc.....share your concerns on D and also agree that the Dawgs are going to light it up on offense. Maybe the best, balanced offense the Dawgs have ever had, assuming AM comes back.

Hopefully our younger D players got some good playing experience this year, especially the 1st four games. They will be needed because you are right, takes a while to learn CTG's 3-4 well enough to play fast.

Great O.......developing D. Scares me for the first two games......guess we will just have to put up 50 on those guys and take our chances.

wlayton, first time in quite some time that I have thought 3, 4 or 5 recruits might make a difference in our upcoming season. A significant difference is what I am trying to say. Not only on offense but defense as well.

Of course I don't know how Grantham thinks, just feel if both of our Nose Tackles go to the NFL, four man fronts might be the order of the day. Don't really look for Grantham to do that, but he did play some four man fronts the past couple of years.

More and more however the high schools are running variations of the three man front.

When I look over the names that are returning to Athens and those that are "sure commits" don't really see the "size" that Grantham said he wants at the NG position. Could be too that Grantham knows "things" that we don't know as yet. Could see Montravius Adams actually playing a defensive end in the 3/4. Impossible to play Adams one on one, too fast, too strong, and he has already developed a lot of moves. Alabama is not going to give up easy on Adams, can't blame them.

Haven't ruled out Kwame coming back, just have a feeling that he will go to the NFL. Big bodies are in great demand there.

wlayton, would not surprise me to see even more "up tempo" offense by us next season. Lots of returning players, and many on the same page.

Sure hope KG comes back for another year of experience.....doubt it too.

The offense is going to be scary good, barring injuries. So many options.....up tempo is great but do you think we will need that with the weapons they have?? Either way, they are going to be a tough thing to slow down, much less stop.

I was thinking of 2014 and the playoff scenario.....think about it, our OL will be experienced beasts, Gurshall will be unstoppable.....maybe a Heisman winner in that mix and the young D will have another season under their belts. I was thinking that could be a perfect year for the Dawgs to be involved in a playoff.

Actually you are right about the up tempo. Guess I am like a lot of folks, like to see some different "things" happening on the offensive side.

For a long spell there was a lot of chatter about all of us being able to "call the play" prior to the next snap. wlayton there was a lot of truth to that.

Now we hear talk about Mike Bobo and the interest in him in many different areas. Truth be told, with some of the players he/we had this past season, much was expected of his developing the talent. However, none of us really knew just how good Gurley would be. A bit like Jarvis Jones on the defensive side, we heard things about him, but that was when he was on the scout team. Once the wraps came off of the two players, the fun began.

With some of the recent changes in the SEC coaching ranks, don't see a lot of job openings in the near future. Would hate to see some of the young talent that is now beginning to show promise from these "young assistants" leave the promised land. We are at a time in our life that we can refer to these assistant coaches as "young puppies".

I am sure that the rest of the SEC teams will improve, but do agree with the 2014 assessment you describe. By 2014, the OJT (On the job training)should put us as close to the Crystal as anyone else in the nation. Came real close this year, and when I reflect on 2012 . . . . it was a very good year, don't remember too many thinking that we were only 5 yards away from the Crystal in Miami.

Yes, I really think that this coaching staff and administration made huge leaps, and that is to be expected when we get things right, whether coaches or players, or both. I like this coaching staff wlayton, will use the description you used in your last post. Maturity.

Just rambling as usual, hate to see college football fade away. We (the SEC) do however have one more hurdle to jump before we show all of the other conferences we are the best, and how about best 7 times in a row. Wow!

Below is a quote from Gurley to Matthews on being a part of UGA's football team. The two were together in Athens this past weekend. Small wonder Gurley is having the success he is. Tray Matthews can and will be a star if he follows Gurley's advice.

“Gurley told me that some folks get the big head, and that they don’t work hard once they get to college,” Matthews said. “But he told me that you can’t just come up here and not work. He told me that he’s heard a lot about me, but that I will have to continue to work.”
