There were a lot of good things seen in Athens yesterday, but little that made me change my
opinion of the coaching in several areas; namely the offensive side of the ball. We've got gobs of
talent on that side, but there is just something not right there.
I do not understand the lack of a killer instinct this team has. Whereas every other top flight team
would have gone for the throat, we instead retreated into a shell. The entire second half our offense
looked like it did against Boise; Out of sync, with absolutely no rhythm or ability to put the
ball game away. I will never understand things like Samuel running parallel to the line of scrimmage
when it's 3rd and literally..two inches. How can this massive offensive lie, massive fullback,
and big down hill runner like that be moving sideways in that situation. I saw Samuel in the
game on 3rd and long, which is really the perfect time to have IC or Carlton in the game as they
have the open field ability to take a draw or swing pass and do something with it in that situation.
We played pretty well on special teams, but we are still having some issues with our kicking game that
we sorely need to work out. Botched snaps, and kicks that are not even close.
I'm not laying this one on coaching, instead laying it squarely on Murray: A couple of those interceptions were huge mistakes on his part. On one.. he just flat out didn't see the defender
underneath the receiver he stared down from the moment the ball was snapped, and another he
tried to force in on the corner route with the safety coming in over the top. Those were just
bad decisions on his part, and throws that should not have been made. He's also still getting
hit too much. O-line is looking a bit better, but they are still lacking on pass protection.
There was a lot of good though, and that needs to be praised. The defense looked really good,
and they were punishing Miss State on tackles. Jenkins made some good plays, and absolutely
murdered that State runner he got in the backfield. Relf got popped hard all day long, and the secondary was in position to make a lot of good plays. I wish they could have held on to a
couple of possible interceptions they dropped, but they were in the right spot and kept those
from being positive plays for the opponent. The run defense was outstanding as well.
IC looked good again until he got caught up into the malaise that took place in the second
half. Mitchell is looking more and more like a developing force to be reckoned with as well.
Looking great with our skill position talent.
A lot of progress overall.. a lot of good things to talk about, but I have still seen little
to change my opinion of our OC.
People keep mentioning this "holding back" and not wanting to give away the entire playbook
to future opponents, but I throw the BS flag on that one. You don't hold back like that
in my opinion. Instead you show a bunch of different things to give our future opponents
too many things to prepare for.. you can set up a play for next week, by showing the
opponent something unique this week. I'm not sure retreating into a total shell really does
much for the future, and it certainly doesn't help your offense work on anything this
week. I'm pretty sure we already know how to run the tailback straight up the middle.
I would rather give the opponent next week too much to think about instead of not enough.
It's an aggressive approach to play calling instead of a defensive, passive one. We seem
scared to show them too much, but I say show them so much that future opponents loose their own
aggression because they have too much to prepare for. Plus give your own team a chance to
work on execution of something in game situations other than your your vanilla run package.
Just my two cents.
God Bless and Go Dawgs
