Picked this up from 24/7 . . . . If AM is having to take a second look at our defense in practice, imagine what is in store for others on Saturday. Very encouraging.
ATHENS, Ga. – Players on offense are offering positive reviews of Georgia’s 3-4 defense this spring versus last season, applauding new tactics more than talent.
Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is dialing up more complex schemes during UGA's second spring with the 3-4 defense. What it boils down to, quarterback Aaron Murray said, is “They just know what they’re doing more” on defense.
“A lot of times last year they weren’t exactly sure where to line up,” Murray said. “Now I look at the safeties. Last year when they were new to the defense, those guys would be in coverage before I even snapped the ball. Now they’re disguising, moving around, trying to play games with me, because they feel more comfortable. They know what they’re doing. They know where they need to go, so they’re able to do more things.”
“It throws us for a loop some days,” center Ben Jones said. “It’s just getting the fits. I know the first year they were missing the fits, so you get a big play every once in a while. But they’re really coming together. Christian Robinson is leading them out there, and they’ve got a lot of people back.”
Robinson is serving this spring as the first-string ‘Mike’ linebacker, moving over from the other inside linebacker position to call signals for the defense.
He says the schemes are definitely getting more complex.
“We understand Coach Grantham trusts us to be able to put in some new and more aggressive stuff,” Robinson said. “That’s just growth. It’s been a while, and we have a year under our belts. We have experienced guys, and we can do that.”
