Sure hope that this is not the beginning of some things that we went through a couple of years back. Guess this leaves little doubt as to whose chances of being the QB at UGA this year are. What in the world do these young folks have between their ears . . . .

Georgia quarterback Zach Mettenberger was arrested over the weekend in Remerton on five charges including underage consumption, disorderly conduct and possession of a fake I.D.

Mettenberger was arrested at approximately 1:39 a.m. Sunday outside of a local restaurant called Flip Flops and was taken to the Lowndes County Jail.

Mettenberger, a freshman, is competing with fellow freshman Aaron Murray and rising junior Logan Gray for the starting quarterback job this spring. Although spring practice began last Thursday, Georgia’s players are on spring break for the next week and will not return to work until March 16.

Georgia’s Athletics Association mandates a minimum one-game suspension for any players found guilty of an alcohol-related violation, which could cost Mettenberger a chance to play in the team’s opener against Louisiana-Lafayette on Sept. 4.

Georgia officials said head coach Mark Richt was aware of Mettenberger’s arrest and was still getting details on the incident. He was not likely to announce any punishment immediately.

Mettenberger redshirted last season but offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said the strong-armed quarterback had made impressive strides since arriving in Athens last spring and was contender for the starting job left open following the graduation of Joe Cox.

“He’s improved tremendously and a lot has to do with getting himself in good physical condition,” Bobo said. “He’s always going to be a big boy. He’s always going to weight around 240. But being in good physical shape where he doesn’t get tired and his legs get tired – he’s never going to be the fastest or the quickest guy, but if he’s in good shape and good condition, he’ll be able to improve his foot quickness.”

Mettenberger played in high school at nearby Oconee County High School.

Unbelievable. What a moron. Underage drinking is bad enough, but to do something stupid enough to warrant obstruction and disorderly conduct charges is totally idiotic.

The SMART era CONTINUES!!!!!!

One of the sad things about this is the fact that it will always be there on ZM's bio.

The case(s) now that Ben Rothlisberger is faced with. Realize that you are not guilty until proven so in a court of law. Vick thought he had the answers, just do not understand the lack of discipline these folks exhibit. They have incredible talent, therefor the money really is laid at their feet. Ben has contracts worth around 100 million now, and who knows how much money Vick pissed away. Really riles me.

ZM, whether or not he would have been the starting QB for UGA this year or not, he certainly has the size, strength and that much talked about arm that the pros go for. Convicted or not, he has been charged. Think you might be right wlayton in an earlier post last week. Something to the effect that ZM would transfer to another school. This could very well be the beginning of that. Think that ZM's Mom is employed by UGA, what a downer this must be for her and the family.

Come on UGA football players, put an end to this.

sadlerdawg, started to post the high-lighted part of your post that is in bold type before you laid claim.

Read several sites and it is amazing the difference in thought patterns. I guess that we take from this incident whatever it is that suits us.

Personally believe that there are a couple of QB's that UGA is pursuing (hard) that makes it uncomfortable for some on campus. Really not writing ZM off, think that he is doing a good job of that himself. Will say it again, think that wlayton was right some time back. Maybe he needs to go a different route and find out what he wants to do. Good Lord blessed him with a cannon for an arm, not sure why he wanted to be BMOC and mess with the cops. You are right, something along the lines of stupid and close to being a moron.

Interesting couple of \"taps\" in Atlanta this weekend. Not sure how you feel, but some of these \"young guns\" need to feel the presence of the \"older folks\". Damn I miss Fast Freddie, Junior, The Flock Boys (Tim, Fonty and Bob) Fireball Roberts and the rest of the gang that made NASCAR what it is. Back in the day when they ran Hudson's, Fords, Chevrolets, Dodge and Plymouths. To hell with a bunch of \"wings\" and 14 second pit stops. Gimme back RACING.
