My thoughts on why Kirby stayed at Alabama

14 years 10 months ago #26951 by baydawg
I think KS wanted to come back to UGA, then Saban guilt-ed him into staying at Alabama. I think Saban reminded KS that he gave him the job as DC at Alabama when KS was relatively inexperienced, hired him at Miami, etc.

From KS's perspective (after Saban's “sound” advice): he could stay at Alabama under Saban, run Saban's defense, which is already in place, and grow his potential for a head coaching job. On the other hand, he could go to UGA, use what he's learned under Saban, install it from scratch at UGA, and risk not succeeding.

From Saban's perspective, he didn't want someone he's taught his defense to go to another SEC power and use everything he taught him against him. He was going to do everything he could to keep KS.

KS doesn't really have that much experience as a DC. I'll admit there's a little bit of “sour grapes” to that thought, but on reflection I wish we'd offered Chavis or Foster $700k instead of Smart. Both have 15+ years experience as DC's....

Bottom line for me, the most important thing has already happened: CMR FINALLY fired CWM. I'm confident CMR will hire an outstanding DC.

BTW, be kind. My first post!

Smart is chicken and weak. He will be out of a job when Saban leaves anyway I bet. No way Bama give the head coaches job to someone like Smart.

I agree kentdaddy. Do you think Saban is happy w/ only 2 NC's w/ 2 diff. teams? I would bet whats in my pocket that he isnt. Maybe repeat champs next year, then it'll be on to the next \"Project:Saban\"....FWIW I think KS may have also ruined ANY chance to be head coach here, when that time comes.

baydawg, excellent first post. Not to worry too much about the folks on this board. Posters here like to talk football, all aspects of football, not the trash talking that is found on many boards. Welcome, hope that your stay is a good one. . . . . :)

I agree with everything posted by everyone here. If KS wanted to stay at 'Bama, that's fine with me and I didn't expect him to leave. BUT, if he did what David Pollack tweeted about signing an agreement, then backing out, that really p!$$#s me off. I'm from the school of when you commit to something, you see the job through. Don't commit to anything if you don't have the onions to carry it out.

The SMART era CONTINUES!!!!!!

Welcome baydawg, you will love this forum.

Agree. To me the bottom line for KS was that it was way too big of a risk to leave Bama no matter how much he loves UGA and wanted to come. If he left, it's a \"feast or famine\" situation. If he got out from under Saban's D image and was successful at UGA......he could write his ticket to a good HCing job.......BUT, if he doesn't succeed....not good. He stays at Bama, lays low, he WILL get a HCing offer within 2 years.

If I'm KS, I don't take that risk either.
