When we first moved to Florida it was near Tampa. John Lynch, Derrick Brooks, and Warren Sapp were all rookies. I had sworn off professional football in disgust with the Smith family (Falcons). We went over to inlaw's house for Thanksgiving and they had a Buc game on TV. I was absolutely floored. It was the best defense I had seen in decades. They were a machine. I was particularly impressed with their zone coverages, disguised blitzes, open field tackling, and lateral swarming. In retrospect, I think the late 1990 Buc defense was probably the best defense that I have ever seen. The steel curtain was good - but they had an offense that generated positive field position. The '84 bears were a one hit wonder. I think the Bucs defense was better than either. I think MK is going to do same at Tennessee. If we play it right then it creates great opportunity because Monte will go around beating up all our competition. If we play it wrong then we get thrown on the trash heap with Vandy and watch all the Atlanta high-school talent migrate out-of-state every fall. IMO, UGA is at an important crossroad. We need to get it right the first time. We need to find the right balance between academics, sports, and guidance within a competitive framework ... and we need to find it yesterday.
