2001 we were 5-3 eight games into the season before ending 8-4. In '96 we were 3-5 under Donnan and finished 5-6 (the last time we had a losing year). In '93 the Dawg team was 4-4 at this point in the season. That year, we also finished 5-6. Donnan had 3 of 5 seasons with 4 or more losses (60%). In '90, Ray Goff's team was 4-4 before losing the rest of the games and finishing 4-7. Goff was 5 of 7 for 4 or more losses (71%) Before that, it was Dooley's '79 Dawgs that went 4-4. Dooley had 12 of 25 seasons (48%) where he had 4 or more losses. Johnny Griffith? 3 of 3. Wally Butts? 13 of 22 (59%). Harry Mehre was 50%. (I left out Joel Hunt because he coached one year: '38).
So, now were at a point where CMR is facing his third four-loss season. That makes him 33%. If this does turn out to be a losing season, CMR will be .111 in that category. Of coaches with five or more seasons: Donnan .200, Goff .286 (and that's not including the two .500 seasons), Dooley .040 (1 losing season and 3 at .500), Butts .364, Mehre .300.
A great many of those guys have buildings named after them. (I believe Lipscomb has toilets named after Goff and Donnan, but perhaps that was just a rumor.) I guess the point of all this is that the numbers show what CMR has brought to the program. 13 years between losing seasons isn't that tough in context, but I understand the flavor is bitter in the season.
I'm not ready to join the fire CMR bandwagon. In fact, it will take quite some doing to get me on that bus, but I'm firmly in the camp of those who believe coaching changes need to happen.
Know who was the last QB to lead a losing team for Georgia? Mike Bobo. I mention this because our buddy Joe Cox has said that he wants to be grad assistant after this year. I understand too that it is a non-sequitur (that is, doesn't follow logically) that poor on field performance leads to poor coaching ability. Of course, there are many more examples of the opposite of that working out just fine. What scares me is that perhaps CMR's blind love and devotion will catapult Joe Cox into a coordinator's role here, and we have a repeat of this year's debacle.
Joe has failed. He tried. He gets points for his commitment, but this is a big boys' game and if you can't play at this level then step aside. I think Logan Gray got a stiff shaft this year by having to take a back seat. You can't get that game-ready mentality in practice. He needs reps. I only hope Aaron Murray is treated better because he's our future.
This season hurts. It tastes bitter when I have to explain it away as \"we're just not good this season.\" I do, however, want to clarify that. It's not saying we don't have talent because we've got more than we deserve at this point. It's not that we don't have a good HC. The three-ring circus that is Bobo, Martinez and Cox, however, is only funny if you are an out-of-towner coming to watch the train wreck. This is the part of the equation that is broken. It's the part that needs to be fixed before we get back to winning. I'm telling you now, the worst thing we can hear is that we will be seeing more of Bobo and Martinez next year, or that Bobo has been replaced by Cox. If that doesn't make you throw up in your mouth, nothing else will.
Of course, we'll be back next year. Some of us will be on this forum all year long, but we'll all be back next season to cheer on the Dawgs, talk about our hopes for the season and bitch when those hopes get trampled. And as long as THAT never changes, we're going to be okay.
GO DAWGS.
