Stars do mean something, as on average the schools who recruit the most starred athletes get better results. On average starred athletes achieve greater success and reach the next level more than those ranked below them.
Here's the thing though... starred athletes also have a high hit or miss ratio and the misses are magnified because of the hype behind the athlete and the effort put into retaining them. The hit and miss ratio is high because of the influence of measurables in the rating.
The truth is that the most starred athletes have the most dominant measurables and while measurables (pure athletic ability) are important, they are not a good measure of football acumen, heart, and work effort.
So the trick is (a trick that <cough> not all ever get) is not to not pay attention to stars, but to realize which 4 and 5 stars to avoid because the measurables outweigh the football acumen, and which 3 stars have more football smarts than they do measurables. Teams can also be overrated by people who just count the starred athletes but don't account for balance and positional value.
I mean lets face it... a 5 star TE is great, but I'll take a 5 star LT over a 5 star TE every.single.time.
So stars don't mean everything, but they do have value as long as you understand what goes into those stars and you don't judge teams recruiting just on counting those stars. Its more complex than that. In my opinion to say they mean nothing is an over-simplification. The truth is they mean
something, but they don't mean everything. They are one piece of a puzzle.
