A thought or two on Mike Bobo.
I have probably been as tough or one of the toughest critics of Mike Bobo’s stay as our offensive coordinator.
Having said that, I have given Mike a lot of thought recently. Looking closer at where our offense is and the possibilities of where it can go.
Looks a little like this to me. Much like when all of us entered grade school. First grade, lots of things were presented to us, and then we had to apply ourselves to make it to the second grade. Back in my day it went something like . . . . See Spot, see Spot run.
Second grade moved past Spot, began learning how to write cursive. Big step joining letter through script.
Third grade, continue moving forward. Fourth Grade still learning new and different things. Into multiplication tables, all the way through x 12.
Fifth and Sixth grade, was much further along, even began to look closer at the girls.
Seventh grade, at this point, playing football and other sports and taking the games seriously.
This is what I think I have seen with Mike Bobo. Maybe he was given the offensive coordinator job a bit too quickly, have often mentioned that I feel Mark Richt was/is more of a “front man”. Different strokes for different folks.
When I look over the past few years and the accomplishments that have been made by Mike Bobo, in my opinion he is way the heck past the first year as offensive coordinator. Do I think that he as yet has become a complete offensive coordinator, can’t give him a grade of A or A+ at this point. Reason for that, the lack of offensive line recruiting and advancement. That falls under his area of expertise.
Do I believe that myself or anyone else on this board was the same young person from the 1st grade up until the 7th grade, no way. Learning curve for all of us.
Looking at the points our offense is putting up in recent years, someone is doing something right. Doing that with what I would say has been less than a dominating offensive line.
From what I can see so far, we are on the same path with the offense. Great running backs heading to Athens, not sure that enough effort, maybe I should say results have shown that we are as yet ready to recruit outstanding linemen. We have two or three coming this year, but that has to be a continuing process.
Another thing that I keep in mind is the results of Mike Bobo’s recruiting efforts. That is not only on the offensive side of the ball, he recruits defensive players as well. Greg told me that UGA would rue the day that Mike Bobo leaves Athens and coaches for another university in the Southeast.
There will always be pros and cons to any coach or player. Personally, think that Mike Bobo has improved through his time as offensive coordinator. Could he have done things different, yes. Do not know a single individual including myself that can claim to have all of the answers the first time they walked on a new job.
My opinion, and others I might add.
