Georgia Defense and Other Things . . . .

Seems to be more and more discussion or lack of honest discussion describing where our defense is.

First two teams that we have played, put some points on the board against us. Mention probably needs to be made of the fact that both teams were top ten teams. Both teams had better than average quarterbacks. Clemson with a receiver that is a high pick in the upcoming draft, not sure he can be covered one on one. South Carolina does not have a receiver the caliber of Watkins, but they can and do catch the football. South Carolina also has found a better than average replacement at running back.

Game against Clemson, offense did score points, but they also failed on some plays and left our defense in less than a good situation.

There are of course some areas on the defense that need to be looked closely at, and are. Watched Ramik Wilson make a lot of tackles in the Clemson game. What I saw from Ramik Wilson against South Carolina did not make me a happy camper at all. Appeared to me that Ramik did not understand the Grantham/Olivadotti play book. Young man has been on campus too long, spent too much time on the practice field and in the film room to play as he did in Athens against South Carolina. Appears that those in charge are moving in a correction direction.

From where I sit, and probably others, we have depth although it is young and untested. You never know exactly what to expect from football players. Some light it up right away, others have a hard time with “organized football”. SEC is not sandlot football for the most part. Comes a time when either the “light” comes on or as some coaches like to say . . . . Next man up.

Up until now Georgia has had to play certain players long stints. Problem was in my opinion, lack of depth at many positions. Hoping that we get a chance to look at several players that have yet to show what they have to offer. While our upcoming game is not a SEC caliber football team, it does give the young pups a chance to run around on the field and practice their skills. That is not meant as a put down against North Texas, it is simply the truth. Personally won’t entertain the thought of North Texas being anything more than a glorified practice. My opinion.

Back for a second to where I started. So the two top ten teams that we played gave up a boat load of points to us. Makes one wonder about their defenses. Lost to one by 3 points and the other . . . . Well fried chicken has always been a Southern staple for Sunday dinner.

We find out where we are against LSU. LSU will find out where they are against Georgia. True test for two very good SEC football teams. So what’s new . . . . Georgia is finally on the path to build depth over the entire team, not just one side and then the other year after year. Again, my opinion.

DAWGS, just to get it out of the way, I believe that the game with Lswho will be a carbon copy of the clempsun game with better defense. That scares me! We've got to have some defensive players grow up in a hurry, and Langley is going to need some help. Hopefully we can get that help without opening up another can of worms, step up JHC. Also the OL hopefully will get back in sync for some long drives on the ground,TOP is all important in this type of game as we all know.

growl, winner of the Georgia/LSU game will open eyes of future opponents for sure, both East and West.

Appears Drew has finally stepped up the pace a bit. Said himself that he worked hard over the summer. Also agree that he now knows what position he will play, makes a huge difference.

Basically the Drew case is what I am talking about when I mention depth. Drew moving back and forth, much like what happened a while back moving offensive linemen back and forth, offensive and defensive play. Don't see that with championship teams. Coaching and recruiting is the name of the game. Build the depth, coach them up, championships possible.

Buc, I picked up one boom statement from your earlier post about “organized football”.

IMO, I feel CMR is now getting that under his belt. He’s been with us a while now and I’ve never felt that he’s grasped that concept until the UF game last year. There are times it seems he loses it though and then it and comes back. Inconsistency at times.

I’m not sure how to put my finger on it but that phrase rang a bell in my head and it reminds me of how Saban coaches as much as I hate to say that. I just hope CMR can get a handle on it and be more consistent with playing “organized football”. And hey, he might be trying too hard on that too. :S

After seeing the Bama/TAM game, it looks like there are concerns on defensive play all over the SEC. Turnovers in that game may skew the overall picture but great offensive play seems to be the game winner so far in the SEC.

We do have some good players on the D side. Fundamentals are lacking. Correct pursuit angles and wrapping up should have been taught in Junior High school and refined at this level. Lack of coaching or are the "players" not just getting it.

In agreement about LSwho. They are a very good team but a little weak in the middle of their D. Which can be exploited with the correct play calling. This D needs to "grow up" over the next week because LSwho is going to bring it. The key will be getting into Mettenberger's face ALL DAY. You give him time to set up and throw and it will be a looong day for our cover guys..........which is another of our 'weak' areas. Basic fundamentals and our cover guys need some correction over the next 2 weeks.........

With all the talk about concussions, both NFL and college, appears this one aspect of the game has changed defenses in both the NFL and college.

More and more I notice receivers less afraid to run across the middle. Not saying that some of the "cheap shots" that were so prevalent before should be allowed, just saying that rule changes have definitely changed football.

Over a long period of time noticed that those that make the rules understand that fans like scoring, that in turn plays right into the hands of those that bring the games to television. Just saying, some will probably get my drift.

You can be the best corner in the game, with the latest rule change, the receivers now have a distinct advantage. That is easily seen each and every week.

Agree in part with ogredawg, must get very close to Mettenbeger, otherwise the receivers win the game. Same applies to LSU, our offensive line gives AM enough time, LSU ain't covering our bevy of receivers.

Gillette, watching the Alabama/TAM game, proves another point about "organized football". Sometimes there will be flukes, like a couple of "throws" that Johnny Football got away with. Guess we can call it whatever, I call it luck and luck plays a big part in many games.

Alabama side, running basically the same formations that we run, passing attempts and receivers running "organized routes" makes it much easier to get the completion. Football plays that are practiced in "practice" pay dividends.

Football is changing, appears there are new rules every year. Might not confuse many here, does me sometimes and . . . . the officials several times in big games. Was a point in time that I could call the penalty prior to the official hitting the button on his side and giving the call. Not sure of that anymore.

I have to accept that many things change over time, not just football. Does not mean I have to like it.
