Interesting Article on Georgia Athletics

I'll stick my two cents in - and given inflation, this isn't even worth that much. However, I do suspect that many would at least secretly agree with this.

I am a "one sport wonder". While on the one hand, I think it would be fun if we had a competitive basketball team, I'm not a huge fan. Honestly - I wouldn't stick my chest out too much if we won the NC in baseball. Or golf. Or swimming. Or gymnastics. Or anything else.

I love football, in a pretty profound way. It's one of the things about ME that defines me. When I think of WHO I am, I think of Georgia football. Goes back to my childhood days and the sights and smells of Sanford Stadium, even though we went just as often to Stegman.

Here at work we have a guy who is a Kansas State fan. He's proud of their football team (rightfully so, THIS year). He's proud of their basketball team. Soccer. Softball. Tiddly winks. Chess. He announces every tournament, every outcome (except the bad ones). Now for many people that would be obnoxious, but not for me. I like the guy. He never runs down another team (except in comparison to his own - fair enough), and that makes it fun to talk about.

Yesterday, and I'm not kidding, I was driving home on Highway 41 after having a pretty large cancer removed from my face (told the kids I have a pirate scar now), I saw a LED billboard welcoming UGA's new baseball coach on board! A BILLBOARD in Kennesaw! What that said to me is that the university is going to push more visibility for the "minor" sports, and is going to push it all over the place. Kennesaw is a lot closer to Kennesaw State, Georgia State and Georgia Tech than UGA, but there was a very cool sign welcoming him to the team.

Throwing money at a program can help, but throwing talent at it helps a lot more - in my HUMBLE (and I'm serious about that) opinion. But if the university is willing to push excellence in the minor sports (which they are doing more than ever before), then I think that will rub off on the football team too.

Thriller - you are not alone when it comes to football being your first love make that UGA football.

Having three sons none who took up the game of football it must have been the yankee gene but played a ton of baseball and loved the game.

After moving south they picked up on how football is a part of our life style very much more than when you travel toward Canada.

The strange thing is how people in the north feel about pro-football. Put a Packer & Bear fan in a room and your asking for a tussle as is the case with many other NFL teams cities.

Maybe it is the lack of having a strong college football conference that is the difference? Good luck with your skin cancer T&P from Athens. yd1

I totally rely on McGarity just like I do on my dentist, CPA, attorney etc.....they are pro's at what they do. I certainly don't drill my own teeth or rely on my own legal knowledge etc. That's what they are paid to do, I'll choose to trust them until proven otherwise.

thriller, been out all morning. Have seriously good vibes about you young man. (Even at your age I can say young man) My sister in law is going to go through the same procedure on Thursday that you just went through.

Never a doubt about you and Georgia Football. It is a joy to read your threads and posts, whether in agreement or not. You played, and have a deep understanding about the game. Know that you stay busy, still does not keep me from wanting to read your work. Brother, good on you. :)

Appears that there are going to be some "universal rules" set down for the SEC and the testing of athletes. I say good. Let's get everyone in the conference on the same page.

Have to say this . . . . Hernandez playing for Urban Meyer, had many chances to correct his drug issues, chose not to. One game suspension after many failed drug tests. Hernandez, not the only one, there were several under Urban's shield. Urban Meyer is all about Urban Meyer, Ohio State will be interesting to watch. Mickey and Minnie will give that university much leeway. Never thought I would see the day that I would dislike any college football coach more than Steve Spurrier . . . . spit happens.

Steve, in the same boat as several on this board, hoping that private messages returns to the board. Some things cannot be said here, feel it is good for the membership. My opinion.

Would like to add this . . . .

When the rules are set for all teams in the SEC to follow, not that I don't trust everyone, just want to be sure that all universities are on the same page.

Drug testing should be administered by SEC Conference Officials, not university members. Why do I say that, you guys know, but will say anyway.

It takes away that element of . . . . "I did not understand the rules". Much like Cam Newton and his Father the Reverend supposedly not being on the same page.

Could be an Athletic Director that does not focus on the rules, would rather focus on other things.

Could be a President of a university, Ohio State for example that did nothing more than make a mockery of himself and the rules.

Could be a Head Coach like Urban Meyer sliding on his belly around the rules.

Could be an ex-coach in Arkansas on a motorcycle ride, breaking the rules.

Who the hell knows, sounds like a lot of the above got their training under the Internal Revenue Service. Did I say that?

Would do well to have the rules in place prior to Mickey and Minnie taking over the SEC. Just saying, it is all about the money.

If I am wrong, correct me, I just say what I think is out there for all to see, and too many don't talk about.

You and I play a game of nine ball, we will lag for the break. Want to play "Kelly", don't keep the pills in your pocket, they go back into the urn when the game is over.

Again, just saying, been around a while and don't want to see College Football ruined by those that have one thing in mind . . . . What is in it for me?

Just talking out loud again, a habit of mine. :)

Edit: wlayton, just went back and read your post #10 again for the second time, think that is what I am trying to say. Want the job to be done right and straight across the board.
